[ML스카우트의 메이저스토리] 박병호, 20홈런 위해선 삼진과 싸워라

올 시즌 메이저리그에서 확실히 예상할 수 있는 게 있다. 2016시즌 메이저리그에서 20홈런 이상, 그리고 동시에 200삼진 이상을 기록할 두 명의 선수가 있다는 것이다. 하나는 미네소타의 박병호, 또 하나 역시 그의 팀 동료가 될 것으로 보인다.

먼저 박병호 이야기. 한국의 슬러거 박병호는 미네소타와 4년간 1200만 달러의 계약을 맺으며 지난 비시즌에 입단했다. 그는 팀에서 일단은 지명타자로 나설 것으로 보이고, 상황에 따라 또 다른 포지션을 받게 될 듯하다.

박병호는 KBO리그에서 뛸 때 총 622타석에서 161개의 삼진을 기록했다. 아마도 그는 메이저리그에서 훨씬 더 힘든 타격 환경을 접하게 될 것이다. 또한 박병호의 어퍼컷 스윙은 많은 삼진을 당하는 폼이기도 하다.

미네소타는 올해 메이저리그에 데뷔하는 박병호에게 적응할 수 있는 시간과 기회를 제공할 것으로 보이는데, 이렇게 될 때 박병호는 20개 이상의 홈런을 치기 위해서 삼진과 싸워야만 할 것이다.

지난 시즌을 돌아보면, 오직 크리스 데이비스(볼티모어 오리올스)만이 200삼진 이상을 기록했다. 정확히는 208개의 삼진이었다. 그러나 데이비스가 200삼진을 넘긴 건 2015시즌 뿐이었다. 나는 데이비스가 올 시즌에도 역시 그 기록에 근접할 수 있다고 보지만, 또 한 번 200삼진을 넘지는 않을 것으로 예상한다.

시카고 컵스의 크리스 브라이언트 이야기를 해 보자. 브라이언트는 2015년 내셔널리그 올해의 신인상까지 받았던 선수다. 그는 지난해 199삼진을 기록했다. 그러나 올 시즌 컵스는 타자들에게 컨택트에 더 집중할 것을 요구하고 있다. 아마도 브라이언트의 삼진 개수는 올해 현저히 줄어들지 않을까 생각한다.

자, 그렇다면 내가 앞서 말했듯, 박병호와 함께 20홈런 이상-200삼진 이상 클럽에 가입하게 될 또 다른 선수는 누구일까?

바로 박병호의 팀메이트인 미겔 사노다. 사노는 지난 시즌 322타석에서 119개의 삼진을 기록했다. 사노는 23세의 젊은 슬러거로, 지난해 7월2일에 빅리그에 데뷔해 한 시즌간 80경기에 출전해 타율 .269, 출루율 .385을 기록했다. 홈런 18개, 타점은 46개다.

그는 메이저리그의 파워히터 중 하나다. 사노는 ‘모 아니면 도’ 타입의 스윙을 하는 거포다. 그의 마이너리그 기록을 봐도 역시 그렇다.

사노의 지난 시즌 메이저리그 기록을 600타석으로 환산해 보면, 32홈런 93타점 30개의 2루타와 95개의 볼넷을 얻은 셈이 된다. 물론, 이건 추정치에 불과하지만 이렇게 계산할 때 삼진은 무려 213개가 된다.
미네소타의 거포 토리 헌터는 지난 시즌 22홈런을 기록했는데, 현재는 은퇴했다. 이제 미네소타 트윈스에는 또 다른 거포 박병호와 2년차 미겔 사노가 있다. 이들 둘이 기록하는 삼진아웃은 보는 이들이 참아내야 할, 또 다른 게임의 일부가 될 것이다.

Two MLB Players to hit 20+ home runs and record 200+ strikeouts; both from Minnesota

Here is a bold prediction for the upcoming season: Park Byung-Ho will be one of two players in MLB with 20+ home runs and 200+ strikeouts along with his teammate.
Korean slugger, Park Byung-Ho agreed to a deal worth $12 million over four years with the Minnesota Twins this offseason. Park is penciled in as everyday DH for his new team and likely will hit in the middle of the order.
The Korean slugger recorded 161 Strikeouts in 622 plate appearances in KBO but forced into much tougher pitching in MLB. Plus, Park’s upper cut swing shapes for bunch of strikeouts. With the Twins willing to give every chance and opportunity for Park to prove his belonging in MLB, the Korean star would be able to hit 20+ home runs despite the struggle with strikeouts.
Last season, only Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles recorded more than 200 Strikeouts in MLB, 208 to be exact. However, 2015 season was first and only season the Orioles slugger posted more than 200+ punch outs hence, I am predicting Davis will come close to the mark again but will not reach the undignified record.
Following Davis was Chris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs, reigning NL Rookie of the Year with 199 strikeouts. This year however, Cubs organization is encouraging their hitters to make more contact at the plate and therefore, the Cubs third baseman figures to make proper adjustments to make less outs via strikeouts.
Thus, who is the other player I am predicting to join Park Byung-Ho with 20+ home runs and 200+ SO club?
Park’s teammate, Miguel Sano, who recorded whopping 119 punch outs in just 322 plate appearances last season, will be the man. Sano is a young slugger who debuted on July 2^nd of the season and hit a hulking .269/.385./.530 with 18 home runs and 46 RBIs in 80 games. One of the best power hitters in the game, Sano figures to be “all or nothing” slugger resembling his Minor League numbers.
Calculating Sano’s numbers from last year and scale them to 600 plate appearances, the 23-year-old slugger would have hit 32 home runs with 93 RBIs, 30 doubles and 95 walks. Those are bona fide star numbers, even with his 213 projected strikeouts.
With Torii Hunter, who hit 22 home runs last year, retired now, the Twins will look to new addition, Park Byung-Ho and sophomore, Miguel Sano to bolt the line-up. On the other hand, it seems the consequence of strikeouts from both sluggers is part of the game the organization needs to be patient about.
