[ML 스카우트의 메이저스토리] '머니볼' 잃은 OAK, 그들이 찾은 돌파구

개인적으론 '스몰 마켓(소규모 자금으로 운영되는 구단)'이 성공하기 위해선 선수 육성에 투자해야 한다고 믿는다. 이 같은 주장에는 마이너리그부터 직접 선수를 키워 기용하는 것이 FA 영입보다 더 효율적이라는 믿음이 있어서다.

한국프로야구에서 스몰 마켓을 꼽자면 넥센 히어로즈가 있다. 그들은 다른 팀처럼 자금력으로 승부하기보단 '머니볼(moneyball, 저비용 고효율을 추구하는 야구단 운영 방법)' 시스템에 의존한다. 강정호, 박병호와 같은 선수를 키워내 메이저리그에 포스팅비를 받고 보낸다.

히어로즈의 운영 방식은 외국인 선수 영입에도 나타난다. 히어로즈는 비교적 저렴한 가격에 외국인 선수를 들여와 KBO에서 좋은 품질의 선수로 키워낸다. 이후 다른 팀에서 더 좋은 오퍼가 들어오면 흔쾌히 보내준다. 일례로 히어로즈에서 성공적인 커리어를 보낸 앤디 벤헤켄은 돌아오는 시즌부터 일본프로야구의 세이부 라이온즈에서 뛰게 된다. 1년 계약에 합의한 벤헤켄은 연봉에서 약 65만 달러의 웃돈을 받으며 활약할 예정이다.

메이저리그에서 스몰 마켓을 대표하는 팀은 오클랜드 애슬레틱스다. 여전히 '스몰 마켓'이라는 꼬리표가 따라다니지만, 오클랜드는 메이저리그 전체로 봐도 매우 성공적인 행보를 걸어왔다. 지난 1990년부터 2005년 성적은 1344승 1200패, .528의 승률이다.

이 기록과 함께 오클랜드는 당시 16시즌 동안 5번의 정규리그 지구 우승을 거머쥐었고, 1번의 플레이오프 아메리칸리그 타이틀, 1번의 와일드카드 결정전 진출이라는 결과를 도출했다. 또한 그 기간 내 정규시즌 지구 2위만 4번을 기록했다. 꾸준함은 오클랜드를 리그에서 흥미로운 팀으로 만들었다.

또한 오클랜드를 논할 때 빌리 빈 단장을 빼놓을 수 없다. 빌리빈 단장의 행보는 예측불허다. 항상 모두가 예상하는 길을 벗어난다.

예로 빈 단장은 지난 2014시즌 제프 사마자와 제이슨 해멀을 영입했고 1라운드로 오클랜드 유니폼을 입은 유망주 에디슨 러셀과 빌리 맥킨니를 내준다. 이어 쿠바 출신 슬러거 요에니스 세스페데스까지 내주며 플레이오프에서 검증된 투수 존 레스터를 영입했다. 유독 유망주를 아끼는 오클랜드지만 빈 단장이 그해 월드시리즈 우승까지 바라보며 던졌던 승부수였다. 결국 빈 단장의 모든 노력은 플레이오프에서 캔자스시티 로열스에 패하며 물거품이 됐지만, 어쨌든 그의 선택은 모든 전문가의 예측을 빗나가게 했다.

지는 것에 신물이 났던 빈 단장과 오클랜드 구단의 '미래를 버린' 승부수가 수포로 돌아가며, 결국 오클랜드는 이듬해 68승 94패라는 최악의 시즌을 맞이한다.

여기서 떠오르는 질문. 왜 빈 단장은 팀의 미래까지 도박하며 유망주를 파는, 다시 말해 스몰마켓답지 않은 결정을 내렸을까.

그의 (영입) 작전과 전략이 모두에게 공개되면서, 더 이상 '머니볼'은 존재하지 않았다. 이제 모든 메이저리그 프론트는 선수의 이동을 앞두고 주판을 두드린다. 한때 출루율은 오직 빈 단장과 오클랜드만이 선수 영입 전 주시하던 기록이었다. 

그 결과 뉴욕 양키스, 보스턴 레드삭스, LA 다저스 등의 빅마켓은 '오클랜드와 같은 방식을 추구하는 주머니가 두둑한 구단'으로 거듭날 수 있었고, 이는 곧 빈 단장에겐 악몽이었다. 결국 오클랜드는 '머니볼'이 탄생하기 전인 최악의 구장, 낮은 이익의 팀으로 돌아갔다.

다시 말해 빈 단장이 2014시즌 모든 유망주를 포기하고 진행한 '올인' 작전은 위와 같은 이유로 나온 '어쩔 수 없는' 선택이었다.

물론 오클랜드가 100% '머니볼'에서 손을 뗀 건 아니다. 지난 시즌 아메리칸리그 MVP 출신 조쉬 도날드슨을 토론토 블루제이스로 보내며 다시 유망주 저축에 나섰다.

동시에 오클랜드는 자신들의 노하우가 파악된 만큼, 빅마켓 구단과의 격차를 좁히기 위해 새로운 운영 방법을 적용 중이다.

이하 오클랜드가 접목하고 있는 새로운 '트릭'이다.

1. '제2의 인생 기회' 제공

1루수 유망주였던 션 두리틀이 이 부상으로 구단의 기대치를 충족하지 못했을 때, 오클랜드는 두리틀을 투수로 전환하며 재기를 위한 기회를 제공했다. 그리고 두리틀은 현재 리그 최고의 마무리 투수 중 하나로 거듭났다.

메이저리그에서 큰 주목을 받지 못했던 브랜든 모스도 있다. 오클랜드는 모스를 플래툰으로 기용하며 '2번째 기회'를 제공했고, 모스는 현재 가장 리그서 가장 강력한 파워 히터 중 한 명으로 거듭났다.

조쉬 도날드슨 역시 시카고 컵스에서 실패한 포수 유망주였지만, 오클랜드는 그를 데려와 MVP 3루수로 키워냈다. 도날드슨은 답례로 트레이드 때 리그 최고의 유망주를 팀에 안겨주고 떠났다.

2. 플래툰 활용

오클랜드는 빅리그 그 어느 팀보다 선수의 플래툰 기용을 즐겨하는 팀이다. 예로 지난 2014년 포수인 존 제이소와 데릭 노리스는 쓰는 팔이 같은(우투-우완, 좌투-좌완) 투수에게 약했고, 상대 팀들의 조롱거리가 됐다. 그러나 오클랜드는 이를 플래툰으로 극복했고, 제이소와 노리스는 매 타석에 들어서 구단이 만족할 만한 숫자를 제공했다.

3. 버리지 못한 '통계'

빈의 '머니볼'은 여전히 진행 중이다. '오클랜드 색깔의 선수'라는 느낌이 들면 영입으로 이어진다. 구단은 여전히 출루율을 우선시하며 선수를 기용한다. '룰5드래프트'로 초록 유니폼을 입은 재미교포 선수인 대니 오를 보면 알 수 있다. 뉴욕 양키스로부터 외면당했던 대니 오는 다음 시즌 트리플A에서 꽤 많은 출전 기회를 얻을 예정이다. 대니 오의 커리어 통산 출루율은 .355다.

Money ball is still legit and it has new ways

It is my belief that small market teams have success when they spend more money on player development. This goes with the belief that it is more cost effective to create your own talent in your minor league system than buy talent in the free agent market.

The closest organization to a small market in KBO could be said as the Nexen Heroes. They do not encompass the money as the other teams in the league and buy in to the “money ball” system. They develop players such as, Kang Jung-ho and Park Byung-ho, and sell them to ML teams for posting fees. 

In addition, when choosing foreign players, the Heroes seem to go for lesser players and try to develop into a quality player in KBO. When the players get bigger offers from other teams, they let them go. For an example, Andy Van Hekken, who spent four productive seasons with the Nexen Heroes, will pitch this season in Japan for the Seibu Lions. He signed a one-year contract in the fall which included a raise over the $650,000 salary he earned in 2015.

The prime example of the small market organization in ML is the Oakland Athletics. Although the A’s are stuck in a small market, the A’s have been a very successful franchise, not just for a small market team, but any team in Major League Baseball. Between 1990 and 2005, the A’s have had a record of 1344-1200, a winning percentage of .528. 

To go along with that record, the A’s have also won 5 Division titles, 1 American League title, and 1 Wild Card playoff berth. In other words, that makes 6 playoff appearances in 16 seasons. Other than that, the team has finished in 2nd place four times over that period. The consistent success of the A’s makes them very intriguing.
Plus, when you talk about the most famous GM in baseball, Billy Beane, it is impossible to predict what they might do. Just when you think they will do this way or that way, they seem to go the other way. 

For example, in the midst of a successful season in 2014, Billy Beane and the A’s traded for Jeff Samardjiza and Jason Hammel for the Cubs at the cost of two former first-round Draft picks in Addison Russell and Billy McKinney. When everyone thought the A’s value prospects more than any team in the league, Beane traded two of his best prospects to go “all-in” that season.

Later in the season, Billy Beane also traded for Jon Lester, a proven pitcher in the playoffs, for a Cuban slugger, Yoenis Cespedes, all these moves did not pay off as they lost to the Kansas City Royals in the playoffs that year but it was certainly something different than numerous experts expected the A’s to do that season.

Sick of losing in the playoffs, Billy Beane and the A’s decided 2014 was the year they would go “all-in”, no matter of the cost of the future. Unfortunately, the future came too soon and the results were horrifying as the A’s finished last place in AL West with 68-94 record.
However, my question is, why did Billy Beane decide to pull off trades that, he knew would kill the future of his team, and small market teams would not do? 

Once his tactics and strategies were available to everyone, there was no such thing as “money ball” anymore. Nowadays, every front office in baseball crunches numbers and figure out the numbers before making any moves. On-base percentage was one of the stats only the A’s and Billy Beane used but now, every team employs it. In the result, the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers became the A’s with money recent years, which could be said as Beane’s worst nightmare. The A’s are right back to where they started before the “money ball” era as a decrepit franchise with a cheap owner, low revenues, and the worst stadium in the game.

The A’s GM recognized this cruel fact and decided to pursue and go “all-in” for Championship in 2014 at the risk of plummeting his farm system and the future of the organization. The “money ball” is still there in Oakland as they traded a reigning AL MVP, Josh Donaldson to Toronto before last season began for prospects.
On the other hand, after other organizations caught up with the analytics, how are the Athletics trying to compete with the bigger markets in baseball?

New tricks are being used nowadays in Oakland.

1. Give players second chances: When Sean Doolittle did not work out as first base prospect due to injuries, they switched him to a pitcher and now, he is one of the best closers in the game. Brandon Moss, who bounced around the league for years, became one of the best power hitters in the league after the A’s took a chance on him as a platoon player. Josh Donaldson was a failed catching prospect in the Cubs organization and the A’s took a chance on him as a third baseman, which blossomed into a superstar with the A’s before Beane traded him away for top prospects. Don’t be surprised if a Korean catching prospect in the A’s organization, Kim Seong-min, turns into a pitcher in the near future.

2. Utilize platoons: The A’s use platoon more than any other team in baseball. For instance, in 2014, most teams would’ve looked at players like A’s catchers John Jaso and Derek Norris and criticize on how they struggle against pitchers that throw on the same side. This is could be seen as a liability but Beane and the A’s see it as a potential strength. Thanks to platoons, they go by the numbers and send a favorable match-ups every time, which is what the A’s do.

3. Still relying on statistics: Beane and “money ball” continues as every single player they acquire seem to be “A’s type” player. The organization is still put players that carry high on-base percentage over their careers. Danny Oh, a Korean second generation ball player, who was selected in the Minors League rule-5 draft last month by the A’s, is another example. He was overlooked in the Yankees organization for years, before heading to the A’s, the 27 year-old outfielder could get a legit chance to prove himself in AAA next season. Oh’s career OBP is .355.
