[ML스카우트의 메이저스토리] 피츠버그는 강정호의 '힘'이 필요하다

강정호(29, 피츠버그 파이리츠)는 피츠버그가 다시 한 번 플레이오프에 진출하기 위해선 반드시 필요한 열쇠 같은 선수다.
 
피츠버그는 팀에서 가장 생산적인 타자 한 명을 잃었다. 지난해 9월 17일(현지시간), 플레이오프가 막 시작되기 전이었다. 강정호는 크리스 코글란(당시 시카고 컵스)의 슬라이딩 때 충돌해 무릎을 다쳤다. 지난해 루키였던 강정호는 심각한 무릎 부상을 당했고, 수술 후 6~8개월 동안 경기에 나설 수 없다는 진단을 받았다.
 
6개월이 지난 후 강정호는 재활 끝에 돌아왔고, 현재는 피츠버그 마이리츠 산하 마이너리그 트리플A 인디애나폴리스 인디언스에서 경기를 소화하고 있다. 예상대로, 강정호는 아직까진 빅리그 투수들의 공을 칠 만한 컨디션은 아니다. 그는 마이너리그에서 11차례 타석에 섰지만 아직 안타는 없다.
 
강정호가 긴 기다림 끝에 빅리그로 복귀한다면, 피츠버그 클린트 허들 감독은 강정호를 붙박이 주전 3루수로 쓸 것으로 보인다. 24일 현재 피츠버그는 9승9패로, 내셔널리그 중부지구 우승 후보인 시카고 컵스에 4경기 뒤져 있다. 만일 팀이 4시즌 연속 플레이오프에 진출하길 원한다면 피츠버그는 강정호가 필요할 것이고, 그래야 피츠버그가 지금까지 보여줬던 것보다 더 공격적인 쪽으로 무게가 더 실릴 것이다.
 
최근, 피츠버그에서는 내야의 왼쪽 사이드(3루수, 유격수)에서 데이비드 프리즈와 조디 머서 듀오가 활약하고 있다. 지난 23일까지 머서는 홈런 1개를 포함해 타율 .305 출루율 .386 장타율 .407을 기록했다. 프리스는 홈런이 아직 없고 타율 .290, 출루율 .380 장타율 .339를 기록 중이다.
 
피츠버그는 메이저리그 평균을 웃도는 팀 타율 .287을 기록하고 있지만, 팀은 절실하게 강정호를 원한다. 아직은 라인업에 파워가 부족하기 때문이다. 피츠버는 홈런 부문에선 30개팀 중 28위다. 올 시즌 홈런이 11개 밖에 되지 않는다. 그리고, 닐 워커(현 뉴욕 메츠)와 페드로 알바레즈(현 볼티모어 오리올스)를 내보낸 이후 클린트 허들 감독은 지난해 이들의 파워 배트를 그리워하고 있다.
 
지난해 강정호는 타율 .287, 15홈런을 기록했다. 두 번째 시즌에는 홈런이 더 늘어날 것으로 예상된다. 올 시즌 초반 머서와 프리즈의 출발이 좋지만, 그들은 아직까지 121타석에서 고작 1개의 홈런을 합작해냈을 뿐이다. 그리고 머서와 프리즈가 그동안 보여줬던 커리어에 비춰볼 때, 이들이 올 시즌 내내 꾸준히 이런 성적을 낼 것이라고는 기대하기 어렵다.
 
피츠버그로서는 이번 달이 올 시즌 길고 긴 기간 중 첫 번째 달에 불과하다. 그러나 현재 라인업은 다소 우려되는 부분이 있다. 중심타선에 어떤 번개 같은 것 말이다. 그게 바로 강정호가 피츠버그 라인업에서 중요한 위치를 차지하는 이유다.
 
올 시즌엔 추신수(텍사스), 류현진(LA 다저스), 박병호(미네소타), 최지만(LA 에인절스), 이대호(시애틀), 오승환(세인트루이스), 강정호(피츠버그)까지 총 7명의 선수가 메이저리그에 있다. 모두가 각자의 팀에서는 팀의 성공을 위해 중요한 위치에 있는 선수들이다. 하지만 그 중에서도 강정호가 팀에서 가장 중요한 역할을 하는 선수로 꼽힌다. 바로 그의 파워가 피츠버그를 다시 한 번 포스트시즌에 진출시키기 위해서 반드시 필요하기 때문이다.

Kang Jung-ho and his power

Kang Jung-ho is the biggest key for the Pirates if they wish to make the playoffs again
The Pittsburgh Pirates lost one of their most productive bats right before the playoffs on September 17^th, 2015 when Chris Coughlin slid into second base trying to break-up a double play. A rookie infielder from South Korea, Kang Jung-ho, suffered a severe knee injury and he was expected to be out for six to eight months after a surgery.
Six months forward, Kang Jung-ho is back and is on a rehab assignment playing for the Indianapolis Indians, a triple-A team for the Pirates. As expected, Kang does not look ready for the big league pitching yet as he was held hitless in first 11 at-bats before hitting a single off a wall.
When Kang Jung-ho is finally called up for his long waited return to the big leagues, he is likely to be an everyday third baseman for Clint Hurdle. Currently, at 9-9 record, the Pirates are four-games behind the NL Central favorite Chicago Cubs. If the team wishes to make the playoffs for the fourth season in a row, the Pirates need Kang Jung-ho and his production in their lineup as they are showing a big time regression in offense this season so far.
Currently, Pittsburgh is utilizing the duo of David Freese and Jordy Mercer on the left side of the infield. Entering Saturday, Mercer has one home run and 11 runs batted in (.305/.386/.407) in 59 at bats. Freese owns no home runs and four runs batted in (.290/.380/.339) in 62 at bats.
Although, the Pirates lead the Major Leagues in average with .287, the team desperately needs the Korean star as they currently do not carry enough power in their lineup. The Pirates presently rank 28^th out of 30 teams in homeruns with just 11 homeruns this season. Also, from the departures of Neil Walker and Pedro Alvarez, Clint Hurdle is missing two of his power bats from last year.
Last year, Kang Jung-ho hit .287 with 15 homeruns and figures to hit more in his second season. Even after getting good productions from Mercer and Freese to start the year, they are combined for just one homerun so far in 121 at-bats. Plus, it is likely the production from Mercer and Freese will not stay at this level as shown in their respective and recent careers.
It is still first month of the season and a long season is waiting for the Pirates. Yet, there is a concern in their lineup so far as they are missing some thunder in the middle of their lineup, the reason Kang Jung-ho is so important for them.
A total of seven Korean Major Leaguers could be seen this season, Choo Shin-soo, Ryu Hyun-jin, Park Byung-ho, Choi Ji-man, Lee Dae-ho, Oh Seung-hwan and Kang Jung-ho. Respectively, each player is vital for their teams’ success but Kang Jung-ho might be the most important player to his team as his power is indispensable for Pittsburg to reach the postseason once again.
