[ML스카우트의 메이저스토리] 과연 누가 더 나을까…김현수? 리카드?

한국의 좌익수 김현수가 지금처럼 될 것이라고는 생각하지 못했다. 전 두산 베어스의 스타 김현수가 볼티모어 오리올스와 2년간 700만 달러의 계약을 성사시켰을 때, 그는 올 시즌 볼티모어의 주전 2번 타자 겸 좌익수가 될 것으로 평가받았다.
 
그러나, 오리올스는 룰5 드래프트를 통해 24세의 외야수 조이 리카드를 데려왔다. 그리고 리카드는 고된 스프링캠프 훈련 뒤에 결국 김현수 대신 개막전 선발 라인업에 좌익수로 이름을 올렸다.
김현수가 약속받은 자리를 잃어버린 후, 오리올스는 김현수가 마이너로 내려가도록 압박을 가했다. 그러나 김현수는 마이너행을 거부했고, 현재 오리올스의 백업 외야수로 25인 로스터에 이름을 올리고 있다.
 
오리올스는 김현수의 시범경기 기록(타율 .182, 출루율 .229, 장타율 .182)을 근거로 그가 마이너로 가야 한다고 말한다.
이런 숫자들, 특히 김현수가 시범경기 초반 23타수 연속 무안타였다는 것은 김현수를 짓눌렀다. 김현수는 시범경기 첫 안타로 물꼬를 튼 후부터는 안타를 늘려가기 시작했다. 초반 23타수 무안타였지만, 그 이후에 나선 21타수에서는 타율 .380을 기록했다.
 
지난해 시범경기에서 피츠버그 파이어리츠가 강정호를 어떻게 다뤘는지 보자. 강정호는 당시 시범경기에서 저조한 성적(타율 .200/출루율 .280/장타율 .444)을 냈다. 이런 사실을 감안해 보면, 볼티모어가 김현수를 다뤘던 방식은 매우 혼란스럽고 실망스러웠다.


 
김현수를 대체한 선수는 룰5 드래프트로 영입한 조이 리카드다. 그는 볼티모어에 오기 전 탬파베이 레이스에 있었다. 리카드는 올해 시범경기에서 타율 .390 출루율 .463 장타율 .576을 기록하며 매우 인상적인 기록을 남겼고, 올 시즌 볼티모어의 중심축이 됐다.
 
애리조나대학 출신의 리카드는 2012년 드래프트 9라운드로 탬파베이 레이스에 선발됐다. 리카르드 최고의 장점은 스피드, 그리고 수비 능력이다. 그는 매우 성실한 선수지만 내 개인적인 생각으론 메이저리그에서 풀타임 선발로 나서기엔 힘이 부족한 선수라는 느낌이었다. 메이저리그 레벨에서 리카드는 제4의 외야수로 적합한 선수다.
 
시즌 개막 후 지금까지, 리카드는 맹활약을 하고 있고 심지어 홈런까지 쳐냈다. 그러나 이런 활약이 계속 이어질까? 그리고 결국 리카드가 김현수를 뛰어넘는 선수라는 게 증명이 될까?
 
리카드는 빅리그에서 3할을 칠 수 있는 타자가 아니다. 그는 .260 정도의 타율을 기록할 선수이며, 팀을 위해 좋은 베이스러닝을 보여줄 선수다.
만일 김현수에게 좀 더 적절한 기회가 주어지고, 그가 팀에 좀 더 적응을 한다면 김현수는 쉽게 타율 .280을 치면서 더 큰 파워를 보여줄 것이다. 또한, 김현수는 볼티모어 타선이 절실하게 필요로하는 왼손 타자다.
 
김현수는 오랜 기간 연속적으로 KBO 올스타로 뽑혔다. 이때까지 프로리그 성적으로 볼 때, 김현수는 조이 리카드를 압도하는 플레이를 해왔다. 리카드는 마이너리거이고, 룰5 드래프트로 뽑힌 선수다. 오리올스가 김현수에게 적절한 기회를 지속적으로 준다면, 김현수는 자신이 해왔던 대로 좋은 활약을 할 수 있을 것이다.

Who is really better: Kim Hyun-soo or Joey Rickard?

It wasn’t supposed to be like this for the sweet-hitting, Korean left-fielder Kim Hyun-soo. When the former Doosan Bear star signed a contract worth $7 million dollars over two years with the Baltimore Orioles, Kim was told he would be the starting left fielder, likely batting second in the order.
Yet, the Orioles have chosen a rule-five draft pick, 24 year-old outfielder Joey Rickard over Kim Hyun-soo as their opening day left fielder after rough spring training.
After losing the job he was promised, the Orioles openly pressured the struggling player to accept the assignment to the minors. However, Kim Hyun-soo refused to go down to the minors and now stays on the 25-man roster as a backup outfielder.
The Orioles pointed to Kim’s line of .182/.229/.182 in spring as the reason for his demotion but those numbers are heavily weighed down by his 0-23 stretch. After collecting his first hit, Kim proceeded to hit .380 over his next 21 at-bats.
Given how the Pirates handled Kang Jung-ho last spring after his own rocky start to his career (.200/.280/.444) in MLB, it is confusing and frustrating to watch how Kim Hyun-soo is being treated by the organization.
The man replacing Kim is a rule-five draft pick named Joey Rickard, who was with the Tampa Bay Rays organization before being selected in the draft. Rickard hit .390/.463/.576 this spring and impressed the Orioles organization so much that he now is a pivotal part of their team this season.
Drafted by the Rays in the ninth round in 2012 from the University of Arizona, Rickard’s best tools are his speed and defensive ability. He is a solid player but lacks power to be an everyday outfielder, in my opinion. He is best suited as a fourth outfielder in ML level. So far in the regular season, he was carried his hot spring into the season, even hitting a home run.
But, will this continue for him and prove he was the right guy over Kim Hyun-soo?
Rickard is not a .300 hitter in the big leagues. He is more likely to hit around .260 with some doubles and provide good base running for the team.
Given a proper chance and adjustments, Kim Hyun-soo could easily hit .280 with more power. Plus, he is left-handed which their line-up desperately needs.
The perennial All-Star in KBO, Kim Hyun-soo has been outplayed by Joey Rickard, a career minor leaguer and a Rule 5 draft pick, but could be taking back the spot he originally had in the future if the Orioles give him a legitimate chance.
