[ML 스카우트의 메이저스토리] '불법 도박' 오승환, 미국 팬은 숫자를 원한다

한국프로야구와 일본프로야구를 평정한 '끝판왕' 오승환. 이제 그의 침착한 플레이를 미국에서도 볼 수 있다. 오승환이 지난해 내셔널리그 중부지구 선두였던 세인트루이스 카디널스 유니폼을 입었다. 소식통에 의하면 계약은 옵션 포함 최대 2년 계약에 1100만 달러(약 133억 1330만 원)인 것으로 알려졌다.

이 우완 투수는 KBO 삼성 라이온즈에서만 277개의 세이브를 달성하며 이 부문 리그 역대 1위에 올라있다. 일본으로 넘어가서는 한신 타이거즈 유니폼을 입고 2시즌 동안 80개가 넘는 세이브를 쌓았다.

오승환은 이제 올해 박병호(미네소타 트윈스), 김현수(볼티모어 오리올스)에 이어 빅리그 무대에 진출한 3번째 한국 선수가 됐다. 이로써 올해 최소 6명의 한국 선수(박병호, 김현수, 오승환과 기존의 추신수, 강정호, 류현진)을 메이저에서 볼 수 있게 된다. 여기에 '룰5드래프트'를 통해 LA 에인절스로 이적한 최지만도 있다.

현재 세인트루이스에는 지난해에만 48세이브를 올린 리그 최정상급 마무리 트레버 로젠탈이 버티고 있다. 로젠탈과 함께 후반 이닝을 책임지는 좌완 케빈 시그리스트, 그리고 베테랑 조나단 브록스턴이 불펜에 있다. 이 밖에도 정상 컨디션을 유지할 경우 8이닝을 책임질 수 있는 조단 워든이 있다. 다만 워든은 지난해 어깨 부상으로 많은 경기에 나서지 못했다.

이처럼 오승환은 꽤 강력한 불펜을 등에 업은 팀의 유니폼을 입었다. 현 내셔널리그 스카우트는 "오승환은 세인트루이스의 6회를 책임져 줄 인물로 보인다"며 "그를 처음부터 마무리로 보진 않았다. 이닝 중간을 책임져줄 '셋업맨'이 그가 있어야 할 곳"이라고 했다.

세인트루이스는 애초 추가의 마무리 투수가 아닌 두터운 불펜을 원했고, 오승환이 적임자였다. 오승환은 마이크 매서니 감독에게 또 다른 옵션을 제시해 줄 것이다.

역대 빅리그에서 활약했던 아시아 출신 불펜 또는 마무리 투수는 그리 많지 않다. 1999년 애리조나 다이아몬드백스에서 데뷔해 ML 통산 86세이브를 기록, 불펜/마무리로서 강한 임팩트를 남긴 김병현이 대표적이다. 이외에도 오쓰카 아키노리, 사이토 타카시, 우에하라 고지, 타자와 준이치(이상 일본), 궈홍즈(대만) 등이 있었다. 오승환은 한국 선수로선 두 번째로 이 명단에 이름을 올리게 된다.

아쉬운 건 그가 해외 원정도박 혐의를 받아 검찰로부터 700만 원의 벌금형으로 약식기소 됐다는 것이다. 이에 대해 오승환은 공식 사과문을 통해 "사려 깊지 못한 행동"이라며 남은 커리어를 오롯이 야구에만 집중하겠다고 강조했다.

그럼에도 오승환의 새로운 미국 팬들은 도박에 관련해 크게 개의치 않을 것으로 보인다. 미국 팬들은 이 '끝판왕'이 후반 이닝을 막아만 준다면 그걸로 족하다. 물론 불법 도박 관련 사안에 대해 팬들이 긍정적인 시선을 보내지는 않는다. 하지만 이미 그 문제는 벌금형으로 해결됐고, 이 때문에 미국 팬들의 시선에 대해 크게 걱정하지 않아도 된다.

많은 야구 전문가들이 불법 도박에 연루된 오승환의 선수 인생이 마침표를 찍었다고 평가할 때, 카디널스가 과감한 베팅으로 그의 커리어를 되살려 놨다. 뛰어난 성적으로 팀의 내셔널리그 중부지구 타이틀 방어에 일조하고, 야구에만 전념해 도박 사건이 '단 한 번의 실수'였다는 것을 증명하면 된다.

After dominating both in KBO and NPB for years as “the final boss”, Oh Seung-hwan is taking his calm demeanor to the United States. Oh Seung Hwan is set to join the NL Central division winner, St. Louis Cardinals after passing his physical. Reportedly, the deal could be worth total of around $11 million in two years, second year being a club option.

The right-hander is the all-time saves leader in the KBO with 277, all of them in nine seasons with the Samsung Lions and recorded 80 more saves with the Hanshin Tigers in NPB over the past two seasons.

Oh will become the third Korean to join the MLB this off-season, following Minnesota Twins' Park Byung-ho and Baltimore Orioles' Kim Hyun-soo. At least six Koreans will likely be in the majors in the 2016 season with Choo Shin-soo, Kang Jung-ho and Ryu Hyun-jin. In addition, Los Angeles Angels’ Choi Ji-man might be joining the list as he was selected in the rule-5 draft last month by the Angels.

The Cardinals currently have one of the best closers in the game in, Trevor Rosenthal, who set a franchise record with 48 saves last season. Setting Rosenthal up in the late-inning duties are hard-throwing lefty, Kevin Siegrist and veteran, Jonathan Broxton. The team also has Jordan Walden, who would be an 8th inning guy if healthy, but the team doesn’t know the availability of Walden, who missed much of last year with a shoulder injury.

The Korean closer is joining already, a pretty impressive bullpen. “Oh seems to be the guy in the 6th inning for the Cardinals,” a current NL scout said. “I didn’t see him as a closer in ML anyways so middle-inning set-up man is pretty much where he belongs.”

The St. Louis Cardinals looking for more depth in the bullpen, figured Oh was the right fit to add to their already, a remarkable bullpen. The former Tigers closer will definitely present another option for the manager, Mike Matheny.

Former or present Asian pitchers, who carried the load of being a closer or set-up man in ML, brings a short list of players. Kim Byung-hyun, who recorded 86 saves in his MLB career, was the first Asian closer/set-up man that had a real impact on his team, debuting with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1999. After Kim, the list is pretty short with Akinori Otsuka, Takashi Saito, Hong-chi Kuo, Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa. Oh will look to be the second Korean pitcher to join the list of notable Asian relievers in ML history.

Oh, however, was summarily indicted last month on illegal overseas gambling charges with Seoul prosecutors also seeking a fine of 7,000,000 won. Oh promptly issued an apology about his "inconsiderate actions" and said he will focus solely on baseball for the rest of his career.

The likely reaction Oh’s new fans to the gambling issue would be almost nothing. The U.S. fans won’t care if “the final boss” shuts down late-inning opportunities. Of course, the illegal gambling issue Oh was fined for is not something to see lightly and the fans will not be thrilled about it when they hear about it but if the issue is taken care, like it has been, the fans probably will not be concerned or bothered.

After numerous baseball experts predicted Oh would be done with his playing career due to his gambling issue, the Cardinals almost saved his playing career by gambling and betting on him. Now, it is vital for the Korean right-hander to show the fans in Korea that it was just a one-time mistake and help the Cardinals defend the NL Central this upcoming season.
