Ranking all 30 MLB opening day starting pitchers

Opening Day is a very special moment for baseball fans. Unlike other sports, every team believes they legitimately boast a chance to compete and contend for a playoff spot. And for starting pitchers, it is an honor to be called on to start on this special day for their respective teams. In that case, who are the best and worst opening day starters for 2016 season?

I am ranking all 30 MLB opening day starting pitchers based on each pitcher's recent performance, the direction we see them going in 2016.

1. Clayton Kershaw (Los Angeles Dodgers)
- Still the best pitcher in baseball, Kershaw retains his No.1 status. This will be opening-day start No. 6 for the superstar left-hander, and at age 28 he is right in the middle of his prime days.

2. Jake Arrieta (Chicago Cubs)
- If anyone can take the No. 1 spot from Kershaw, it would be the Cubs right-hander. Arrieta led all baseball last year with 22 wins and his 1.77 ERA was second only to Zack Greinke. Dominating stuff and the determination to be the best in the game, I would like Jake Arrieta to take the ball for me in a must-win situation.

3. Zack Greinke (Arizona Diamondbacks)
- After serving as the Robin to Kershaw in Los Angeles for three seasons, Greinke will be the bona fide ace for Arizona and make his second opening day start overall. The right-hander is now 32 years old and has lost some velocity but with his outstanding command, he is still one of the best pitchers in baseball.

4. Max Scherzer (Washington Nationals)
- The Nationals was a mess in the second half of 2015 season but they still have one of the best starting rotations in baseball. Scherzer will get the nod for the second straight season as the opening day starter, beating out two very capable pitchers in Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez.

5. David Price (Boston Red Sox)
- Price will now make his third straight opening-day start for a third different team. Price started the opener for the Rays in 2013 and 2014, and then in Detroit last season. Now, he's with the Red Sox, where he'll likely make several more after signing seven years, $217 million dollar deal.

6. Felix Hernandez (Seattle Mariners)
- Hernandez will be the opening day starter for the Mariners for eight consecutive years, which is the longest current streak in MLB. On opening days, the Venezuelan right-hander has a 6-0 record with a sparkling 1.49 ERA.

7. Dallas Keuchel (Houston Astros)
- Keuchel had a breakout year in 2015 as he won the AL Cy Young award with 20 wins and 2.48 ERA. He will lead the young Houston Astros squad and hope to get back to the postseason.

8. Chris Sale (Chicago White Sox)
- Sale posted a career low 3.41 ERA last season in 31 starts in 2015. However, his stuff is so good that he still led the American League with 274 strike outs.

9. Madison Bumgarner (San Francisco Giants)
- For the past five seasons, Bumgarner threw more than 200 innings which means he is a workhorse. A three-time All-Star and the MVP of the 2014 World Series, Bumgarner is consistent as it gets.

10. Matt Harvey (New York Mets)
- The Mets have the best rotation in baseball with Harvey, Syndergaard and deGrom. This will be Harvey's first opening day start, and it comes against the Royals, which is where he left off in Game 5 of the World Series.

11. Adam Wainwright (St. Louis Cardinals)
- The Cardinals won 100 games last season despite Wainwright missing five months with a torn Achilles. Now he's back, and he's ready to make his fifth opening-day start overall.

12. Corey Kluber (Cleveland Indians)
- Despite Kluber’s ERA rising from 2.44 to 3.49 in 2015, he is still the obvious and best option for the Indians over youngsters Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar.

13. Cole Hamels (Texas Rangers)
- With Yu Darvish still out with Tommy John surgery, Hamels will get the nod for the defending AL West champions.

14. Sonny Gray (Oakland Athletics)
- Making his third opening day start in a row, Sonny Gray is just flat out good despite his 5-11 height.

15. Chris Archer (Tampa Bay Rays)
- Archer is so underrated and that is probably why you haven’t heard about him yet. He has one of the best pitchers in MLB and he could be ready to step into elite status. The 27-year-old right-hander was a first-time All-Star last season, posting a 3.23 ERA while striking out a team record 252 batters in 212 innings.

16. Francisco Liriano (Pittsburg Pirates)
- With Gerrit Cole dealing with rib inflammation early in spring training, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle chose Liriano for his third straight opening-day start.

17. Masahiro Tanaka (New York Yankees)
- If it wasn’t Tanaka’s ongoing elbow problem, he would be ranked higher on the list. For now, the Japanese right-hander throws the best splitter in the game.

18. Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers)
- Verlander is a former Rookie of the Year, Cy Young and MVP. He has two no-hitters to his name and 157 career victories but has shown signs of decline since turning 30.

19. Edison Volquez (Kansas City Royals)
- Volquez vs. Harvey. That's a rematch from Game 5 of the 2015 World Series and it’s happening on the opening day.

20. Tyson Ross (San Diego Padres)
- Ross has the stuff to have a break-out season. With his good 2-seam fastball and slider, he is one of the best young arms in baseball.

21. Marcus Stroman (Toronto Blue Jays)
If Stroman is healthy, he is a true ace on a contending team like the Blue Jays. After coming back from Tommy John last September, the 24 year-old right-hander will be relied upon to be a No. 1 starter.

22. Ervin Santana (Minnesota Twins)
- After being suspended the first 80 games last season, Santana went 7-5 with a 4.00 ERA over 108 innings. He will get his first opening day start in 11th season.

23. Garret Richards (Los Angeles Angels)
- Richard won 28 games and posted a 3.18 ERA over the last two seasons, will officially get the nod for the first, snapping Weaver's string of six straight openers.

24. Wei-Yen Chen (Miami Marlins)
- If Jose Fernandez was starting on the opening day, he would be a top 10 guaranteed on this list. However, he is being monitored this season after coming back from Tommy John surgery and will start two games later.

25. Julio Teheran (Atlanta Braves)
- With rebuilding mode fully on this season, the Braves will turn to Teheran for the opening day. He is a good enough pitcher though, posting 3.44 ERA in his career.

26. Chris Tillman (Baltimore Orioles)
- The Orioles still lacks a true ace even after signing Yovani Gallardo in the offseason. Tillman is reliable pitcher and will be making his third opening day start.

27. Raisel Iglesias (Cincinnati Reds)
- The Cuban right-hander has the least experience of the group as he only has 18 MLB career starts under his belt. However, there seems to be a buzz around him and could be a break-out star this season.

28. Jeremy Hellickson (Philadelphia Phillies)
- Hellickson mostly struggled last season, posting a 9-12 record with a 4.62 ERA for Arizona. The former AL Rookie of the Year will be leading one of the youngest rotations in baseball.

29. Jorge De La Rosa (Colorado Rockies)
- De La Rosa is a veteran left-hander who has survived in Coors Field, spending his last eight seasons with the organization. Once a flame thrower, he relies on his sinker and secondary stuff to hang in there.

30. Wily Peralta (Milwaukee Brewers)
- Without an ace, Peralta will get the nod for the rebuilding Brewers. The 26-year-old right-hander was limited last season by an oblique injury and then struggled when healthy, posting a 4.72 ERA across 108 2/3 innings. The only other viable option would have been Matt Garza.
