추신수의 하락세

17일 개비 오티즈 코치로부터 추신수의 부진에 대한 이야기를 들어봤다. 오티즈는 추신수의 소속팀 텍사스 레인저스의 라이벌 오클랜드 애슬레틱스 소속이다.

국민적 영웅, 롤 모델, 정신적 지주, 슈퍼스타, 아이돌 등 추신수를 떠올릴 때 한때 한국 팬들의 머릿속에 떠오르던 단어다. 추신수는 야구뿐만 아니라 한국에서 대중적으로 한국에 영향을 끼쳤다. 추신수는 2005년 시애틀 매리너스에서 데뷔 이후 메이저리그에 모습을 나타내면서 확실한 존재감을 드러냈다. 하지만 이 밖에도 추신수가 명성을 얻은 이유는 그가 우리의 위상을 드높여주며 엄청난 노력으로 팀에게 헌신하는 선수이기 때문이다.

추신수 커리어는 화려하다. 추신수는 여지껏 2할7푼8리의 타율과 함께 128홈런 505타점을 남겼고, 2008시즌부터 2010시즌까지 3년 연속 3할 타율을 넘겼다. 평균의 타율과 함께 힘, 스피드, 수비, 어깨 등 '5툴' 플레이어의 표본이 될 만한 활약을 보였다. 20-20(20홈런, 20도루)클럽에 3년 동안 들며 힘과 스피드를 증명했다. 또한 투수 때 경험을 살려 엄청난 송구 능력을 자랑한다. 추신수는 검증된 실력으로 2014시즌을 앞두고 7년 1억3000만달러 계약서에 서명했다.

그러나 한국 출신의 슈퍼스타는 예전 모습을 보여주지 못하고 있다. 그는 지난 7월 13일 만 33세를 넘긴 그의 나이를 고려하면 급격한 하락세까진 보일 이유가 없지만, 현재 그의 성적은 확연히 줄어들고 있다.

시즌 첫 달, 최악의 성적을 냈지만, 프린스 필더를 제외하곤 텍사스 라인업 전체적으로 부진했다. 다행히 추신수는 4월 9푼6리까지 떨어졌던 타율로부터 5월 내내 기록한 2할9푼5리의 성적으로 반등에 성공했다. 그러나 이후 그의 타율은 다시 2할3리에 머물고 있는데 가장 큰 약점은 1할5푼3리의 타율을 기록하고 있는 좌완투수 상대 타율이다. 따라서 '플래툰' 선수로 기용하는 방법이 있지만 그러기엔 추신수의 몸값이 터무니없이 비싸다.

물론 추신수의 문제로는 좌완투수 상대 타율만이 아니다. 급격한 스피드의 하락세도 한몫한다. 추신수는 2014년 텍사스로 팀을 옮긴 이후 7개의 도루 시도 중 단 3개만을 성공했다. 이 모두 지난해 나온 성적. 추신수는 올해 1번 도루를 시도했고 성공하지 못했다.

오티즈 코치는 "우리는 더 이상 추신수의 도루를 염두에 두고 있지 않다"고 밝혔다. 그는 이어 "추신수가 텍사스와 계약을 맺었을 때 우리 투수와 포수에게 '추신수가 도루를 할 것이다'라고 말하며 견제했다. 하지만 추신수는 더 이상 도루 시도를 하지 않는다. 그렇다고 텍사스가 발 빠른 야구에 제한을 두는 팀도 아니다"고 덧붙였다. 텍사스는 전반기 동안 54개의 도루를 기록하며 아메리칸리그 전체 이 부문에서 4위에 올라있다.

클리블랜드 시절과 현재의 추신수를 비교하면 달라진 점이 눈에 띈다. 2013시즌, 추신수는 타석에서 1루 베이스까지 도달하는데 약 4초가 걸렸다. 당시 추신수는 좌타자로서 6점(평균은 5점)을 받았다.

하지만 최근 병살타 등을 당하고 있는 그의 속도는 급감했다. 1루에 도달하기까지 약 4.2초의 시간이 걸린다. 메이저리그 평균에도 못 미치는 속도. 스피드가 줄어들며 수비 범위까지 영향을 미치게 됐다.

더욱 중요한 건, 그의 배트 스피드 역시 느려졌다는 것. 추신수는 상대 투수의 실투를 쉽게 놓치지 않았으나, 최근 홈런 등 장타로 연결해야 할 실투를 쉽게 공략하지 못하고 있다. 따라서 오티즈 코치는 "우리가 추신수를 상대할 때는 무조건 정면승부를 주문한다"면서 "또 타순이 프린스 필더 바로 전이기 때문에 정면승부를 요구하는 것도 있다"고 말했다.

과연 추신수가 후반기에서 반등할 수 있을까? 우리는 그러길 바라지만 현 상황은 추신수의 부활에 대해 비관적인 생각을 들게 한다.

The decline of Choo Shin-soo’s career

On July 17, 2015, I’ve interviewed a current coach for the Oakland Athletics, a rival team of Choo Shin-soo and the Texas Rangers, Gabby Ortiz, to analogize the current decline of Choo’s career.

National hero, role model, mentor, superstar, idol; all these words can be applied when describing Choo Shin-soo to both Korean and Korean-Americans baseball fans. The positive and powerful impact of Choo is not only in baseball but the whole pop culture and social media in his national country. Choo made his presence felt in the league since he has made his debut in 2005 with the Seattle Mariners. With all these facts however, the biggest reason why Choo is immensely popular among Koreans, here and abroad, is that he epitomizes who we are, hard-working, humble and non-individualistic.

Choo Shin-soo is a career .278 hitter with 128 home runs and 505 RBIs and batted .300 three years in a row in 2008-2010. He is a perfect example of a 5-tools player, hit for average, power, speed, fielding, and arm strength. He has recorded three 20-20 seasons (20 homeruns/20 stolen bases) in his career which proves his power and speed. He also has a canon of an arm, being converted to a position player from a pitcher, understandably. With his impressive credentials, Choo signed a seven-year 130 million contract before the 2014 season.

The Korean superstar might not be the same player we all are accustomed to however. He just turned 33 years old on July 13th and there shouldn’t be a reason for him to decline dramatically at his age but that may not be the case as he is showing signs of drop-off in his numbers. He had a poor first month, but who in the Rangers’ lineup didn’t? Prince Fielder didn’t, but everyone else did. Choo rebounded from a .096 April with a .295 May, but he’s hitting .203 since. His woes and his struggles against left-handers (.153 average, .469 on base-plus slugging percentage) could relegate him to a platoon player, and an expensive one at that.

It isn’t just his struggles against the lefties that is a concern however, as Choo has a total of three stolen bases since coming over to Texas in 2014, all three of them coming last year. Last year, he attempted a total of 7 stolen bases and was caught 4 times. This year, he was caught in his only attempt. “We don’t really worry about Choo stealing bases anymore,” Gabby Ortiz said about preparing for games against the Rangers. “The first year he signed with Texas, we told our pitchers and catchers, Choo will run. But he just doesn’t run anymore and it’s not like Texas doesn’t run, it’s just him that has stopped running,” he added. The Rangers, as a team, has 54 stolen bases in the first half of the season and that is ranked 4th in the American League. It is fair to say that he has lost a step.

Comparing his running speed to first base when he was in Cleveland and now, there was a significant difference. When he was with the Reds in 2013, his speed to 1B was 4.0 seconds, which is a grade 6 (5 is average) in scouting for left-handed batters. However, in a recent double play ball, his speed was significantly slower, reaching to 1B in 4.2 seconds, which is a below average speed in the Major League. Not only is the lack of speed affecting him on the base paths but he has lost a step in the outfield, weakening his range.

More importantly, Choo Shin-soo may have lost some of his lightning quick bat speed. The mistakes by the opposing pitchers were rarely missed by the outfielder in his earlier days, but he is definitely missing the pitches he should be clobbering. “Our approach against him is to go right at him,” the Athletics coach said. “Since he bats mostly in front of Prince Fielder, we go right at him.”
Can Choo Shin-soo make a turnaround in the 2nd half? We all hope so. However, it may not happen and he may never be the same player we remember considering his current status.
