[ML 스카우트의 메이저스토리] 다저스 2선발, 류현진일까 마에다일까

얼마 전 잭 그레인키를 같은 지구 라이벌인 애리조나 다이아몬드백스에 빼앗긴 다저스. 다저스는 평균자책점 리더인 그레인키의 빈자리를 이미 영입한 스캇 카즈미어와 공식 발표를 앞두고 있는 마에다 겐타로 메운다. 메이저리그 역대급 '원투펀치'를 형성했던 그레인키는 커쇼와 함께 지난 3년간 185경기서 104승 34패 1327탈삼진 2.10의 평균자책점을 합작한 선수였다.

소식통에 따르면 영입전에서 패한 다저스는 그레인키를 보내고 FA로 풀린 이와쿠마 히사시(일본)를 2선발 대체자로 낙점했었다. 만 34세인 이와쿠마는 지난 4년간 메이저리그에서 47승 25패 3.17의 평균자책점을 기록한 자원이었다. 그러나 메디컬 테스트에서 삐걱댔고, 다저스는 이와쿠마 대신 다른 '옵션'을 물색했다. 결국 이와쿠마는 원소속팀이던 시애틀 매리너스에 남았다.

현재 그레인키가 없는 다저스의 선발 라인업에는 커쇼-브렛 앤더슨-알렉스 우드가 남아있다. 여기에 카즈미어와 마에다가 합류한 것이다. 물론 지난해 5월 어깨 수술 후 재활 중인 류현진도 있다.

만약 류현진이 수술 전 기량을 되찾을 경우, 커쇼의 뒤를 받쳐 줄 강력한 2선발 후보다. 어깨 수술은 선수 생명까지 위협할 수 있는데, 다행인 건 류현진의 상태는 마운드로 돌아오지 못한 마크 프라이어, 브렌든 웹의 부상만큼 심각하지 않은 것으로 전해졌다.

또 다른 2선발 후보로는 마에다가 꼽힌다. 2008년부터 히로시마 도요 카프 유니폼을 입고 97승 67패 2.39의 평균자책점을 남긴 투수다. 지난해에는 29번 선발 등판해 15승 8패 2.09의 평균자책점을 기록, 리그 최고 투수에게 주어지는 사와무라상을 2번째로 수상했다.

현지 다수 언론에 따르면 마에다와 다저스는 계약 조건에 합의했고 공식 발표만을 남겨놓고 있다. 다저스는 마에다 영입을 위해 일본리그와 메이저리그 포스팅 규약에 따른 최대 금액인 2000만 달러를 모두 채운 것으로 알려졌다. 

그렇다면 류현진이 예전 구위를 회복하고 마에다가 팀에 합류한다는 가정하에 다저스의 2선발 자리는 누가 차지할까?

인터뷰에 응한 아메리칸리그 구단 스카우트는 마에다에 대해 "이 일본 우완 투수는 아주 좋은 3개의 구질을 가지고 있다. 그의 직구는 91~95마일에 형성되며 슬라이더를 결정구로 지니고 있다. 체인지업도 이에 못지않다"고 극찬했다. 스카우트는 "마에다는 메이저리그에서 좋은 3선발 감이다"고 마에다의 성공 가능성을 점쳤다.

메이저리그에서 실력 검증을 마친 류현진 역시 다저스처럼 경쟁력 있는 팀에서 약간 부족한 2선발 또는 확실한 3선발 감이다.

마에다와 류현진 중 한 명을 선택하긴 어렵지만, 다수 스카우트들에 따르면 '건강한' 류현진이 선발 경쟁에서 근소하게 앞서다는 평가다.

오는 2016시즌, 지구 라이벌인 샌프란시스코 자이언츠와 애리조나 다이아몬드백스의 화려한 마운드를 대적해야 하는 다저스. 커쇼와 원투펀치를 이룰 2선발 자리를 놓고, 두 아시아 선수의 흥미로운 경합이 펼쳐질 예정이다.

Who will be No.2 starter behind Clayton Kershaw; Ryu or Maeda?

After losing out on Zack Greinke sweepstakes to the division rival, Arizona Diamondbacks, the Los Angeles Dodgers replaced the ERA leader of last year, Greinke, with Kazmir and Maeda. For three years together, he and Kershaw formed one of the best starting duos in recent history, posting a collective 104-34 record and 2.10 ERA with 1,327 strikeouts over 185 starts.

Since being outbid for Greinke, the Dodgers reportedly signed free-agent righty Hisashi Iwakuma, who was projected as the Dodgers' No. 2 behind Kershaw. The 34-year-old posted a 47-25 record with a 3.17 ERA in his four seasons in MLB with the Seattle Mariners. However, due to medical issues, the Dodgers decided to pursue other options and Iwakuma eventually remained with the Mariners.

Now that Greinke is gone, the Dodgers currently have starting pitchers on their roster consisting of: Kershaw, Brett Anderson, Wood, recently signed Kazmir and Maeda. Of course, they do have Ryu Hyun-jin coming back from his shoulder surgery, operated last May. If the Korean star is back to where he was before the injury, he could possibly fill in as the No.2 starter behind Kershaw. The shoulder surgery is definitely a career threatening for pitchers but it seems the damage in his shoulder was not dreadful as some of the pitchers that have failed to come back successfully in the past such as Mark Prior and Brandon Webb.

Another name for the No.2 starter emerged is another Asian pitcher, Kenta Maeda. Maeda has registered a record of 97-67 and an ERA of 2.39 since joining the Hiroshima Carp in 2008. Last year, Maeda went 15-8 with a 2.09 ERA in 29 starts and earned his second Sawamura Award as the league's top pitcher.

According to multiple sources, the Dodgers met with Maeda and have an agreement with the 27 year-old right hander. Under the posting rules, a maximum of $20 million was set for Maeda's release fee. Hence, assuming Ryu hyun-jin is able to make a full recovery and Maeda is part of the Dodgers rotation, who would take the No.2 starter status behind Kershaw?

“The Japanese right-hander, Maeda, throws three excellent pitches,” one AL scout said. “His fastball is around 91-95 MPH with slider being his best off-speed pitch and change-up, not far behind.”

Ryu Hyu-jin, is a proven ML starter when he’s healthy but is a fringy No.2 starter/solid No.3 starter on a contending team like the Dodgers. “Maeda is a good No.3 starter in ML for me,” the aforementioned scout said of Maeda’s potential in the States.  It is difficult to choose the No 2 starter at this moment due to the unproven Maeda, but Ryu has the edge if he is healthy according to numerous scouts.

It would definitely be interesting to see the two Asian pitchers try to establish themselves as the No.2 starter behind Kershaw next year while trying to keep up with the fantastic rotations of division rivals, the Giants and Diamondbacks.
