[이승원의 ML 돋보기] 김현수, '좌익수 플래툰'일 가능성 크다

메이저리그(MLB) 스카우트로부터 KBO 최고의 타자라는 호평을 들었던 김현수가 이제 메이저리그 문을 두드렸다. 현지 언론에 따르면 김현수는 볼티모어 오리올스와 2년 700만 달러 계약을 맺었다.

2015시즌 141경기에 나서 .326/.438/.541(타율/출루율/장타율) 기록과 함께 홈런 28개 128타점으로 인상적인 한 해를 보낸 김현수다. 또한 삼진은 63개로 막는 사이 볼넷은 101개를 골라냈다. 통산 기록에서도 볼넷(597개)이 삼진(501개)보다 많다.

볼티모어는 시즌을 앞두고 외야 코너를 볼 수 있는 자원이 필요했고, 댄 듀켓 볼티모어 단장은 '가격 대비 성능'이 뛰어난 KBO 출신 김현수를 찾아냈다.

통상적으로 FA(자유계약선수) 시장에서 350만 달러의 연봉은 플래툰 또는 후보급의 외야수에게 지급되는 액수다. 그러나 미국 무대에서 아직 검증되지 않은 김현수를 볼티모어가 어떻게 활용할지는 미지수다. 다만 계약 규모만 놓고 본다면 김현수에게 주전 자리가 보장된 것은 아니다.

그렇다면 김현수는 볼티모어에서 어떻게 쓰일까. 

현재 팀 중견수 자리에는 올스타 출신 아담 존스가 버티고 있다. 양쪽 코너는 놀란 레이몰드, 헨리 우루시아, 주니어 레이크가 번갈아가며 지키고 있어 빈 자리가 없다.

최근에는 마크 트럼보까지 영입하며 타선에 무게를 더했는데, 여기에도 변수가 존재한다. 트럼보는 현재 지명타자 또는 1루수로 점쳐지고 있다. 그러나 'FA 최대어'로 풀린 크리스 데이비스가 볼티모어에 잔류하면 트럼보는 경험이 있는 우익수로 이동할 가능성이 있다. 또 한 명의 외야 자원이다.

이 경우 남는 자리는 좌익수 한 곳인데 김현수는 여기서 주전 또는 플래툰으로 기용될 수 있다. 

아메리칸 리그 구단 스카우트는 "김현수가 좌완 투수를 상대로 뚜렷한 성적을 보이기 전까진 놀란 레이몰드와 플래툰으로 기용될 가능성이 크다"고 점쳤다. 레이몰드는 우타자로 2005년 드래프트 2라운드서 지명됐고 지난해 61경기에서 6홈런 2할4푼7리를 남긴 선수다.

KBO에서 팀을 한국시리즈 우승으로 이끌고 '프리미어 12'까지 거머쥔 김현수의 또 다른 도전이 시작됐다. 스카우트는 "개인적으론 김현수의 콘택트 능력을 정말 좋아한다"고 덧붙였다.

김현수의 첫해 성적을 .283/.348/.420(타율/출루율/장타율)으로 예상해본다.

Kim Hyun Soo will likely be a platoon in LF

Kim Hyun Soo, who was considered to be the best hitter in KBO by numerous MLB scouts, is heading to the Major Leagues after agreeing 2 years/$7 Million terms with the Baltimore Orioles.
The Korean outfielder had another solid year in KBO as he put up .326/.438/.541 slash line with 28 home runs and 128 RBIs last year in 141 games last season. Kim walked 101 times with just 63 strikeouts in 2015 and has had more walks (597) than strikeouts (501) over his career.

The Baltimore Orioles needed a corner outfielder and the GM, Dan Duquette, was able to find one in Korean market as a large number of ML teams are taking advantage of the low-priced but quality-talent market of KBO. 

Usually, the amount of $3.5 Million per season in a free agent market is likely a platoon/back-up type outfielder. But, for an unproven player like Kim, it is difficult to guess exactly how the Orioles will employ Kim into their roster. The contract itself, informs an assured spot in the everyday line-up is not guaranteed for the Korean star.   

So, how will Kim Hyun Soo utilized in Baltimore? The Baltimore Orioles have the center field covered with an all-star, Adam Jones, but the corner outfield spots were occupied with the combination of Nolan Reimold, Henry Urruia and Junior Lake. 

Along with those players, the Orioles recently just added a power bat in their line-up in Mark Trumbo. But, the former Mariner might be playing first base or DH instead of one of the corner outfield spots if Chris Davis is retained as he is the biggest bat left in the free agent market currently. If Davis maintains with Baltimore, Trumbo could fill in as a regular RF as he has done before in his career. 

Kim is likely to play in LF in ML but would he be a regular or a platoon player? “Until Kim shows that he belongs to play against left-handed pitching, he will likely be a platoon guy in LF with Nolan Reimold,” an AL scout said. Reimold is a right-handed hitter, drafted by the Orioles in 2nd round of 2005 draft and batted .247 with 6 HRs in 61 games last year.

After leading his team to a Korea Series win and also the Premier 12 Championship, the 28 year-old outfielder seems to be ready to take the next challenge in MLB. “Personally, I love Kim’s ability to hit for contact and his approach,” the aforementioned scout said.
