[이승원의 ML 돋보기] 美 스카우트 "박병호 가치, 오직 방망이로 증명해야"

야수로서 KBO 최초로 메이저리그에 진출한 강정호, 강정호에 이어 제2의 KBO 출신 메이저리거가 되려는 박병호, 비교하기는 쉽고 또 당연한 일이다. 모두가 알 듯 둘은 같은 팀에서 내야 수비를 함께하며 '호형제'로 불릴 정도였으니까.

따라서 2일 넥센 히어로즈에 의해 포스팅 된 박병호는 자주 강정호와 비교되고 있다. 동시에 박병호 측도 메이저리그 구단과의 계약이 강정호처럼 부드럽게 진행되길 바라고 있을 것이다.

지난 시즌 강정호는 421 타수 2할8푼7리의 타율과 15홈런을 남겼다. KBO 야수도 메이저리그에서 성공할 수 있다고 말하기에 충분했다. 하지만 KBO에서 숫자로는 강정호와 대등한 혹은 더 뛰어난 성적을 거둔 박병호가 그의 동료처럼 주전이 될 수 있을지는 의문이다. 박병호는 지난 시즌 3할4푼3리의 타유과 함께 53개의 공을 담장 밖으로 뿌렸으나, 이번에 대화를 나눈 메이저리그 스카우트들은 설사 박병호가 자신이 가진 모든 능력을 보여준다 해도 '강정호만큼의 성공은 거두지 못한다'며 다소 비관적인 평을 내놨다.

박병호를 지켜봤던 한 메이저리그 스카우트는 "힘은 인정한다. 하지만 삼진이 너무 많다"며 "내가 우려하는 건 그의 수비 실력이다. 타구 스피드는 따라갈 수 있겠지만, 발이 느리다. 메이저리그 1루수 전체를 봤을 때 평균 이하다"고 했다.

박병호는 2015시즌 528번의 타수에서 161번 삼진을 당했는데 삼진 비율로 계산하면 약 30%다. 강정호는 KBO에서 뛴 마지막 시즌에서 이 부문 25%를 기록했다. 메이저리그에 와선 23%로 조금 떨어졌다.

하지만 강정호처럼 박병호의 삼진 비율도 떨어진다고 생각하면 오산이다. 또 다른 스카우트는 "박병호와 강정호는 플레이 스타일이 전혀 다르다. 강정호가 메이저리그에서 가치를 인정받았던 건 유격수를 포함, 그의 광범위한 수비 포지션 소화 덕분이다. 때문에 강정호는 홈런과 안타를 만들어내야 한다는 부담이 없었다"고 했다.

이어 "박병호는 (다양한 수비 능력이 없기 때문에) 따라서 홈런 등으로 자신의 가치를 증명해야 한다. 수비수로서의 박병호는 팀에 가치를 증명하지 못한다. 방망이만이 그를 주전으로 승격시켜줄 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

만약 박병호가 계약 조율에 성공, 메이저리그에 발을 디딘다고 가정했을 때, 그를 지켜본 스카우트들은 그를 페드로 알바레즈 또는 크리스 카터급으로 내다봤다. 물론 그의 능력이 모두 발휘된다는 가정하에 나온 평가다.

주사위는 던져졌다. 대한민국의 대표 1루수 박병호의 2일 포스팅 절차가 시작됐다. 과연 박병호의 KBO 성공을 보고 대형 계약을 안겨다 줄 구단은 나타날까? 아니면 적은 금액에서 끝날까? 모두의 관심이 박병호에게 쏠리고 있다.

Park Byung-Ho should not be compared to the success of Kang Jung-Ho

It is easy and obvious to compare the first KBO position player to make the jump to the Majors, Kang Jung-Ho, to the potential second KBO player to make the transition, Park Byung-Ho. As we know, the two were teammates, shared the same side of the infield and were called the “Ho brothers”, in the past.

The point is, they are bound to get compared with each other when Park Byung-Ho, who is expected to be posted on November 2nd by his current team, Nexen Heroes, is trying to make the same smooth transition Kang Jung-Ho made this year. 

Kang Jung-Ho, who hit .287 with 15 home runs in 421 AB, proved KBO position players are capable players in the Major Leagues. However, just looking at the numbers isn’t the way to see if Park will be a regular player in ML like his fellow. Park hit .343 and whopping 53 home runs this past season but many ML scouts believe he won’t be successful as Kang Jung-Ho if he is able to take his talents to the ML.

One NL scout said about Park, “Yes, he has power but he strikes out too much” He continued with, “Plus, his defense is a concern to me as he can handle the balls hit to him but his footwork isn’t good which leads to having a below average range at first base.” 

Park struck out 161 times in 528 AB, a rate of 30% and it is easy to compare with Kang’s strike out ratio. Kang struck out 25% of his at bats in his last KBO season but that number actually dropped to 23% in ML. 

It is easy to say that Park will make the similar adjustments as Kang and won’t strikeout more in ML but that is not the case according to a scout mentioned above, “To be honest, it’s hard to compare Park to Kang because they have different playing styles, Kang has more value because he can play multiple positions including SS so he was able to concentrate on forgetting the HR and making contact to bring value to his team.” 

He added, “However, with Park, he “HAS” to hit HR to be a valuable player. He is not going to bring value as a defender so he really has to hit to help his team. And, I am not so sure if Park is going to hit enough to be an everyday player.”

If Park is able to make the proper adjustments and make it in ML, many ML scouts believe he will be a player like, Pedro Alvarez or Chris Carter rather than a superstar. And, that is a big “if” to many of the talent evaluators.

The Korean first baseman, expecting to be posted on November 2nd, will anxiously wait to see the result of the posting and his future. Will the ML teams believe in Park’s success in KBO and make a huge offer? Or will ML teams shy away from the concerns on his game and make a small offer? is the question we are all asking at this point.
