[ML 스카우트의 메이저스토리] 이대호는 어떻게 비판을 잠재웠나

이대호(34, 시애틀 매리너스)는 지난 경기(한국시간 14일)에서 텍사스 레인저스 투수 제이크 디크먼을 상대로 대타 끝내기 홈런을 날렸다. 당시 홈런으로 연결된 공은 그의 가슴께로 날아오는 97마일(약 157km) 짜리 공이었다. 이 홈런은 그동안 그를 향해 날아왔던 수많은 비판적 시선들, 특히나 ‘이대호가 과연 92마일(메이저리그 평균 구속) 짜리 빠른 공을 칠 수 있겠느냐’는 스카우트들의 의문이 이어지던 끝에 나온 것이었다.

이대호는 KBO리그를 평정한 후 NPB(일본프로야구)에서 네 시즌간 뛰었다. 그는 2015년 최고의 시즌을 보냈는데, 141경기에서 31홈런을 쳤고 98타점을 기록했다. 홈런과 타점 모두 이대호의 커리어하이였다.
보도에 따르면, 이대호는 일본 팀과의 협상 테이블에서 6억 엔 (사실 일본 언론은 이대호가 5억엔(약 50억원)의 연봉을 제안받았다고 밝혔다. 필자가 액수를 잠시 헷갈린 듯하다. -역주)를 제안받은 것으로 알려졌는데, 그는 돈 대신 꿈을 좇아 메이저리그로 향했다.

그러나, 그 어떤 팀도 이 덩치 큰 1루수에게 주전 자리를 약속하지 않았다. 이대호는 시애틀 매리너스와 마이너리그 계약을 맺었다. 많은 기자들과 스카우트들은 이대호가 스프링캠프 끝에 메이저리그로 갈 것이라고 예상하지 않았다. 이대호가 헤수스 몬테로라는, 마이너 거부권이 있는 25세의 젊은 선수와 경쟁해야 했기 때문이다.

그러나 이대호는 결국 개막전 25인 로스터에 이름을 올렸다. 그가 로스터에 들어가고도, 여전히 많은 사람들은 그가 메이저리그의 빠른 공을 쳐낼 수 있을 거라고 생각하지 않았다.

이대호는 지난주 텍사스 레인저스전에서 연장 10회 대타로 타석에 서서 경기를 끝내는 투런 홈런을 날렸다. 장소는 시애틀의 세이프코필드였고, 이 홈런으로 시애틀은 4-2 승리를 거뒀으며, 5연패에서 탈출했다.

재미있는 사실은 이대호가 홈런을 치기 사흘 전 타격 박스에 들어가서 비슷한 상황을 겪었다는 것이다. 이대호는 당시 오클랜드 애슬레틱스의 션 툴리틀을 상대했다. 시애틀은 1-2로 끌려가고 있었고, 연장 10회말이었다. 이대호는 삼구삼진을 당했다. 세 개의 공 모두 오클랜드의 마무리로부터 나온 95마일의 빠른 공이었다.
이대호는 오클랜드의 왼손투수가 던진 빠른 공을 쳐다보기만 했고, 과연 그가 빠른 공을 쳐낼 수있는가 하는 의심이 들게 만들었다.

3일 후, 이대호에게 또 다른 기회가 찾아왔다. 이번에도 역시 빠른 공을 던지는 왼손 투수, 제이크 디크먼이었다. 2 스트라이크 노 볼이라는 카운트가 또 한 번 그의 앞에 왔다. 마치 지난 번 경기가 재방송되는 듯했다.
나는 확신한다. 제이크 디크먼과 레인저스는 이대호가 두리틀을 상대로 고전했다는 점을 잘 알고 있었을 것이다. 그리고 디크먼은 세 번째 공을 높은 97마일의 패스트볼로 던졌다. 그러나 이번엔 결과가 달랐다. 이대호는 왼쪽 담장을 넘겼다.

이 상황은 이렇게 설명할 수 있겠다. 이대호는 자신이 패스트볼에 매우 약하다는 점을 레인저스와 상대 투수가 간파하고 있다는 점을 이미 알고 있었고, 그를 역이용해서 수싸움을 끌어갔던 것이다. 만일 이대호가 패스트볼에 약점을 보인다는 것을 레인저스가 알아채지 못했다면(이대호가 초구 2개에 스트라이크를 당하면서 자신의 약점이 나오고 있다는 듯이 속이는 행동을 하지 않았더라면) 디크먼이 세 번째 공으로 97마일 짜리 패스트볼을 던지는 상황은 일어나지 않았을지도 모른다. 이대호는 모두가 예상하듯 배트를 빨리 내지 않았다. 그는 경험이 풍부했고, 자신의 약점을 빠르게 커버할 수 있을 만큼 스마트했다.

이대호가 발전해가는 모습을 보는 건 매우 흥미롭다. 그가 매우 제한적인 상황에서 지금까지 대부분의 기회를 만들어냈다는 점은 확실하다. 이대호를 의심하던 많은 사람들은 조용해졌고, 이대호는 아마도 그의 세 번째 다른 리그(메이저리그)에서 임팩트 있는 타자가 될 것이다.

How Lee Dae-Ho always quiets his critics and doubters

The walk-off homerun last week by Lee Dae-ho against Jake Diekman of the Rangers was a 97 mph heater up around Lee’s chest. And this was after many critics and scouts questioned if the former Japan Series MVP could turn a fastball around at 92 mph (ML average fastball).
After dominating KBO, Lee played his past four seasons in NPB. He enjoyed his most productive NPB season in 2015 with the Hawks, hitting 31 home runs, along with 98 RBIs, both career highs, in 141 games. Lee left a reported 600 million yen ($5.1 million) on the table in Japan to chase his dream in the MLB.
However, not a single team would give the big first baseman a guaranteed spot on their roster and he settled for a minor league deal with the Mariners. Numerous reporters and scouts doubted Lee would make it but at the end of the spring training, he beat out Jesus Montero, who was out of a minor option, to make it to the Seattle’s 25-man roster on opening day. Even after making the roster, many doubted Lee Dae-ho’s ability to hit MLB fastballs.
But last week against the Rangers, Lee appeared in the batting box with a runner on first and launched a two-run blast in the bottom of the 10th inning against the Texas Rangers at Safeco Field in Seattle to lift the Mariners to a 4-2 victory, snapping their five-game losing streak.
The amusing fact was that three days earlier, Lee Dae-Ho stepped into a batter’s box in a similar situation against Sean Doolittle of the A’s. With Seattle down 2-1 in bottom of 10^th inning and a runner on board, Lee struck out on three pitches, all fastballs at 95 mph from the A’s closer. Lee looked over matched by the A’s lefty’s fastballs and the questions on his ability to catch up with good fastballs became a reality.
Three days forward, Lee Dae-ho was given another chance against another hard-throwing left-handed reliever, Jake Diekman. With two strikes and no ball against his count, it seemed like another over matched strikeout was place in order. I’m sure Jake Diekman and the Rangers were aware of Lee’s struggle against Doolittle and threw a chest-high fastball at 97 mph. But, the result was a different one as Lee hit it out to left field.
It is safe to say Lee Dae-ho cheated on that 97 mph fastball as he knew his struggles with good fastballs and knew what pitch Diekman would throw in that situation. Lee Dae-ho might not have the quick bat you want from a typical first baseman but he has the experiences and smarts to cover up for it.
It is interesting to see how Lee Dae-ho progressed throughout the season but it is clear he is making most opportunities out of limited chances he is getting so far. With many doubters quieting down, Lee Dae-ho might just become a impactful hitter in third different league of his career.
