[이승원의 ML 돋보기] '응찰 無' 손아섭, 능력 정말 모자랐나?

'WBSC 프리미어 12'에서 활약하며 팀을 우승으로 이끈 손아섭(27,롯데). 올겨울 그에게는 가장 의미가 큰 비시즌을 앞두고 있었다. 메이저리그 진출을 선언한 손아섭은 지난 16일 포스팅 신청으로 미국 진출의 첫걸음을 내디뎠다. 하지만 이보다 너 안 좋은 시나리오가 있을까. 메이저리그 구단 중 누구도 손아섭에 응찰하지 않았다.

손아섭은 통산 3할2푼3리의 타율과 함께 평균 이상의 스피드를 가지고 있다고 평가된다. 2013시즌에 43번의 도루 시도 중 36번을 성공했다. 이 발 빠른 외야수는 좋은 컨택 능력을 가졌고 몸쪽 공도 가끔 홈런으로 연결한다.

내셔널리그팀 스카우트는 "손아섭은 수비에 있어서 넓은 범위를 자랑한다. 종종 중견수를 볼 수 있는 실력이다. 그러나 매일 경기에 나서는 주전급 중견수로는 무리가 있는 게 사실이다"고 손아섭을 평가하며 "그는 타구를 잘 파악하는 똑똑한 야수다"라고 말했다.

스카우팅은 통상적으로 메이저리그에 진출할 잠재력이 있는 선수부터 즉시 전력감으로 나눠 관찰한다. 그렇다면 손아섭은 누구와 비교될 수 있을까? 나와 인터뷰에 응한 스카우트는 아오키 노리(일본)를 떠올렸다.

아오키는 일본프로야구(NPB) 8년 생활을 매듭짓고 미국으로 건너갔다. 만 30세가 되던 해 2012년 밀워키 브루어스에 입단한 그는 이후 4년간 .288/.286/.285/.287의 타율을 기록했다. 첫해에는 도루도 38번 시도 중 30번 성공하며 빠른 발을 자랑했다. 아오키는 그 후 꾸준히 메이저리그팀의 코너 외야를 담당하고 있다.

손아섭과 비슷한 유형의 선수인 아오키가 위의 성적을 남겼는데, 손아섭은 정말 그에 비해 한참 모자랐던 것일까? 물론 손아섭은 아오키만큼 증명된 선수는 아니지만, 스타일이 같은 건 사실이다. 

따라서 위 질문에 대한 내 답은 '노(no)'다. 손아섭이 만약 '4번째 외야수(주전 3명 외야수 바로 다음 후보를 뜻한다)'로 메이저리그에서 뛸 의지가 있었다면 기회가 없던 건 아니다. 물론 그런 의지가 있었다고 믿는다. 필자도 어제(24일) 손아섭 포스팅 소식을 듣고 적잖이 충격을 받았다.

손아섭에 관심을 가졌다고 알려졌던 팀들이 있다. 그들이 손아섭 영입에 뛰어들지 않은 이유는 무엇일까.

1. 샌디에이고 파드리스

파드리스는 지난 시즌 매일 좌측 외야를 담당했던 저스틴 업튼을 자유계약선수(FA)로 놓아줄 수밖에 없는 상황이었다. 파드리스는 그들의 넓은 외야를 책임져 줄 외야수가 필요했고 손아섭이 적임자가 될 수도 있었다. 또 리드오프 성격의 선수가 상위 타순에 필요했다. 여기에 AJ 프렐러 단장은 김광현에게 포스팅을 제안할 정도로 아시아 시장에 호의적인 인물이었다. 파드리스가 손아섭에 관심을 나타내지 않은 건 놀라우나, 또 한편으로는 이해가 된다. FA 시장에서 손아섭과 같은 후보 외야수를 찾는 건 그리 어렵지 않기 때문이다.

2. 볼티모어 오리올스

볼티모어는 발표 전까지 손아섭을 영입할 가장 유력한 팀으로 언급됐다. 볼티모어 외야는 현재 중견수 아담 존스와 함께 놀란 레이몰드, 헨리 우루티아, 주니어 레이크가 있어 포화상태다. 이런 가운데 개인적으로는 볼티모어가 손아섭 영입에 적극적으로 뛰어든다고 생각하지 않았다. 손아섭을 영입한다 해도 큰 '업그레이드'는 아니었으니까. 그저 루머였을 뿐이다.

3. 뉴욕 양키스

지난 시즌 양키스의 '4번째 외야수'였던 크리스 영은 FA로 풀리는 만큼 팀을 떠날 가능성이 크다. 카를로스 벨트란은 후반기 준수한 활약을 펼쳤으나 나이가 나이인 만큼 1년 풀타임 소화를 기대하긴 힘든 게 사실이다. 그럼에도 양키스가 관심을 보이지 않은 건, 마운드 보강이 더 시급하다고 판단했기 때문일 수 있다.

4. 워싱턴 내셔널스

제이슨 워스는 최악의 한 해를 보냈다. 워싱턴은 그를 좌타자와 함께 플래툰으로 기용할 뜻도 있어 보인다. 워스는 앞서 2할2푼1리의 타율 12홈런에 그쳤지만, 좌완 투수에 강했던 건 사실이다. 따라서 도약을 노리는 워싱턴이 손아섭을 워스와 하메 플래툰으로 기용하는 건 꽤 괜찮은 옵션으로 보였다. 그러나 지난 후반기 완벽하게 무너지며 포스트시즌 진출에도 실패했고, 그 후유증에 구단은 현재 난장판인 상태다.

5. 시카고 컵스

컵스는 현재 리그 전체를 통틀어 가장 뛰어난 선수들을 보유하고 있는 것이 사실이다. 그러나 굳이 보강할 부분을 찾으라면 외야를 꼽을 수 있다. 곧 FA로 풀리는 중견수 덱스터 파울러는 조만간 거액의 연봉을 요구할 거고, 카일 슈와버는 외야에서 부족하다는 걸 중요한 '에러'를 범하며 증명했다. 따라서 컵스는 좌/우익수보다는 중견수가 더 필요했다고 추측할 수 있다.

결론을 내리자면 손아섭을 필요로 했던 팀도 적었을 뿐더러, "왜 백업 외야수에 포스팅비를 지출해야하나"라는 생각을 모든 구단이 했을 가능성이 높다.

Was Son Ah Seop really this bad?

After helping his country win the Premier 12 tournament, Son Ah Seop was possibly facing the biggest off season of his life as the Giants' outfielder took his first step toward the Major League on 16th of November, after his team asked the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) to post the 27-year-old all-star. However, this result was the worst it could get, as no MLB team bid for the Korean all-star.

Son is a career .323 hitter and is considered to have a plus speed as he stole 36 bases in 43 attempts during 2013 season. The speedy outfielder has contact approach at the plate but can turn on a pitch in once in awhile. “Defensively, Son has good range in the outfield, enough to regularly drift into center field but not enough to play center on a regular basis himself,” a NL scout said about the KBO star. “He gets good reads off the bat and is a smart fielder.”

Scouting is mostly about comparing the potential ML player to players currently in ML. Then, who does Son Ah Seop remind you of? The answers I’ve come up with and hearing from other scouts is Son Ah Seop can be compared to another Asian outfielder, Nori Aoki.

After playing in NPB for the first eight years of his service, Aoki found his way to the States, debuting with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2012 at the age of 30. Since then, the former NPB all-star has been one of the most consistent outfielders in ML as he posted .288, .286, .285, and .287 averages each year. Aoki also showcased his speed as he stole 30 bases in 38 attempts in 2012. Aoki has been playing regularly as a corner outfield in ML.

So, the question is Son Ah Seop really this bad that no team bid for him? Of course, Son is not as good and proven as Aoki but they are similar players. My answer to the question above is ‘no’. If Son was a free agent and did not mind being a fourth outfielder in ML, I am pretty sure he could have. I am shocked myself as I heard the news yesterday.

Here are five teams that could have been a good fit for Son:

1. San Diego Padres

The Padres are likely to let their everyday LF last year, Justin Upton, as he is a free agent. The Padres as the organization will look for a player that fits their spacious ball park and line drive hitting Son was almost too perfect fit. The Padres also need a lead-off type guy at the top of the order. Plus, the Padres GM, AJ Preller, is a fan of the Asian market and has shown it before, as he posted the highest bid for Kim Kwang Hyun last off season, although the contract negotiations fell short. I am shocked the Padres did not bid any money on Son but understandably, a back-up outfielder can be found easily in a free agent market.

2. Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles had been mentioned as a potential fit for Son but what happened? The Baltimore Orioles have center field covered with Adam Jones but the corner outfield spots are currently occupied with the combination of Nolan Reimold, Henry Urrutia and Junior Lake. Personally, I did not see the Orioles making a big move for Son as the Korean star is not a big upgrade from the players they already have for corner outfield positions. I believe it was just a rumor, not coming from a real source.

3. New York Yankees

Chris Young, their fourth outfielder last year, will likely be gone as he is a free agent. Carlos Beltran had a decent second half last year but he cannot be relied upon for the whole year as he is getting older and older. However, the Yankees need pitching than a back-up outfielder.

4. Washington Nationals

Jayson Werth was absolutely horrible last season and the Nationals might look to platoon him with a left-handed bat for LF next season. Werth only hit .221 and 12 HR last year but has destroyed left-handed pitchers throughout his career. Therefore, platoon with Son and Werth might have been a good option for the team looking to rebound from a disappointment season but the organization is a mess right now after a meltdown in the second half last year.

5. Chicago Cubs

The Cubs probably have the most talented roster in the whole league. However, the one spot they need to address in the off season is the outfield depth as Dexter Fowler is set to command a lot of money and Kyle Schwarber could not adjust to LF, making errors in vital games last year. The Cubs probably thought they need a CF not a corner OF in Son Ah Seop.
In conclusion, the market for Son Ah Seop was there as a few teams could have used him next year but they all thought “why would I spend a posting fee on a potential back-up outfielder?”
