[이승원의 ML 돋보기] '퓨어히터' 김현수, 군침 흘릴 MLB 구단은?

강정호의 성공적인 한 해는 한국 선수 메이저리그 진출의 교두보 역할을 톡톡히 해냈다. 덕분에 현재 몇몇 KBO 선수가 미국 진출을 타진하고 있다. KBO 선수들에 대한 MLB 팀들의 관심은 나날이 커져가고 있고, 박병호에 대한 미네소타 트윈스의 1285만 달러 포스팅도 이끌어냈다. 역대 미국에 진출한 아시아 야수 중 스즈키 이치로에 이어 두 번째로 높은 금액이다.

지난 몇 달간 박병호와 함께 손아섭, 황재균, '재팬시리즈 MVP' 이대호의 메이저리그 진출 의사도 공개됐다. 하지만 모두 미국 땅을 밟을 수 있을지는 의문이다.

이번 칼럼을 통해 이야기할 선수는 김현수다. 고등학교를 졸업하고 2007년 두산 베어스의 유니폼을 입은 김현수는 첫 시즌부터 .273/.337/.398(타율/출루율/장타율)로 활약했다. 그해 같은 팀 임태훈에게 근소한 차이로 신인상을 내줬고 이듬해 .347/.448/.495 59볼넷으로 잠재력을 폭발시켰다.

인터뷰에 응한 메이저리그 스카우트는 "김현수는 내가 볼 때 최고의 퓨어 히터(pure hitter, 콘택트에 능한 타자)다"고 했다. 이어 "모두가 박병호를 이야기하지만, 박병호와 김현수를 선택하라면 김현수를 메이저리그로 데려가겠다"고 덧붙였다. 스카우트는 그의 빠른 스윙과 타구가 빅리그에서도 최소 평균 실력이라고 강조했다.

수비가 문제다. 인터뷰에 응한 또 다른 스카우트는 "하지만 수비는 평균 이하로 보인다"고 거들었다. "김현수의 스피드는 빠른 편이 아니다. 외야 수비 범위가 제한적이다. 1루를 볼 수도 없는 노릇이다"고 견해를 밝혔다.

김현수는 올 시즌 팀을 이끌고 한국시리즈 우승을 차지했고 선수 생활 첫 자유계약선수(FA) 자격을 얻었다. 아직 메이저리그 진출을 공식화하진 않았지만, 만약 미국 진출에 도전장을 내밀 경우 다수의 스카우트들은 김현수의 타격 능력에는 물음표를 던지지 않을 것이다.

그렇다면 김현수가 미국 진출을 선언한다는 가정하에 원하는 메이저리그 구단은 어디일까. 스카우트들이 그를 1루수로서 보지 않는 만큼 외야를 위주로 김현수의 자리를 찾아봤다.

1. 볼티모어 오리올스

오리올스의 외야 중간은 아담 존스가 차지하고 있다. 하지만 외야 구석은 중간급 선수인 놀란 레이몰드, 헨리 우루시아, 주니어 레이크 등이 돌아가며 출전 중이다. 김현수는 그 선수들을 대체할만하다.

현재 오리올스의 겨울 시장 최우선 목표는 1루수 크리스 데이비스를 잡는 것이다. 천문학적인 몸값이 예상되는 만큼 오리올스 또는 다른 팀이 계약할 것이 분명하다. 만약 오리올스가 데이비스를 잡지 못한다면 김현수로 부족한 타선을 채우는 방법도 있다.

2. 워싱턴 내셔널스

모두가 알고 있듯, 워싱턴은 브라이스 하퍼라는 세계 최고의 우익수를 보유하고 있다. 하지만 좌측 코너는 다르다. 제이슨 워스가 있지만, 그는 현재 눈에 띄는 하락세를 보이고 있다. 지난해 2할2푼1리 12홈런이 전부다. 김현수가 워스 자리에 들어갈 수도 있다.

3. 샌프란시스코 자이언츠

2015시즌 노리 아오키와 헌터 펜스가 부상으로 신음했고 나머지 외야 자원도 꾸준함과는 거리가 있었다. 앙헬 파건의 모습도 좋지 못했을뿐더러, 시즌 중반 영입한 말론 버드도 존재감을 나타내지 못했다. 현재 샌프란시스코는 2016시즌 펜스를 우익수로 그레고 블랑코를 중견수로 쓸 가능성이 높다. 하지만 샌프란시스코가 FA 노리 아오키를 잡지 못하며 현재 좌익수는 뚜렷한 대안이 없다. 김현수는 두산에서 좌익수다.

4. 텍사스 레인저스

메이저리그 외야에서 2명의 한국 선수를 볼 수 있을까? 볼 수도 있다. 지난해 우익수 추신수와 중견수 드쉴즈가 생산력을 뽐냈다. 좌측 코너는 상황이 다르다. 조쉬 해밀턴이라는 왕년의 스타가 있지만, 예전 모습은 사라진 지 오래다. 텍사스는 해밀턴의 대체자를 눈여겨보고 있을지도 모른다. 김현수가 그 자리에 들어간다면 국내 팬들의 꿈이 현실로 된다.

5. 뉴욕 메츠

내셔널리그 챔피언 뉴욕 메츠는 이번 겨울 요에니스 세스페데스를 놓칠 가능성이 크다. 세스페데스가 원하는 금액이 한 두 푼이 아니기 때문이다. 김현수가 대안이 될 수 있다.

Kim Hyun Soo is the best “pure hitter” in KBO

Well, we all admit Kang Jung Ho opened the doors for numerous and I mean “numerous” KBO position players to possibly head over to the Majors in the future. MLB teams are becoming more and more aware of the success of KBO, resulting in the Minnesota Twins spending 12.85 Million posting fee for Park Byung Ho, the second highest posting bid for all Asian position players, just behind the amazing Ichiro last week. 

Over the last few months, Park Byung Ho, Son Ah Seop, Hwang Jae Gyun and Japan Series MVP Lee Dae Ho announced their desires to play in the Major but the best hitter of them all might not be on the list of the possibly future Major Leaguers.

The hitter I am talking about is the Doosan Bears outfielder, Kim Hyun Soo, who was undrafted out of high school and signed with the Doosan Bears in 2007. In his rookie season, the teenager batted .273/.337/.398 as a regular. He was a runner-up in KBO Rookie of the Year voting behind Tae-hoon Im that year. He became a star in 2008 recording a .347/.448/.495 line with 59 walks to 25 strikeouts.

“Kim Hyun Soo is the best “pure hitter” to me. Everyone talks about Park Byung Ho but I would rather take Kim if I had to choose between Park and Kim in MLB,” the aforementioned scout said. “With his quick swing and line drive approach at the plate, he will definitely hit for average in Majors.”

The only problem might be the other side of the baseball, defense. “Kim is a below average defender to me,” another current scout said. “His speed is obviously not fast, and that leads to not having the range he needs in the outfield. Can he play 1st base?” he asked jokingly.

After leading his team to a Korea Series win against the Samsung Lions in 2015, Kim Hyun Soo became a free agent for the first time in his career. He has yet to announce if he will pursue a career in MLB but if he does, one thing is for sure to many scouts, Kim will hit in the Majors.

So, what are the possible destinations for Kim Hyun Soo? Most of the scouts in ML do not see Kim Hyun Soo as a possible 1st baseman. Therefore, I've analyzed possible destinations for the Doosan outfielder.

1. Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles have center field covered with Adam Jones but the corner outfield spots are currently occupied with the combination of Nolan Reimold, Henry Urruia and Junior Lake. Kim Hyun Soo would be a good replacement for those mediocre names. The Orioles biggest priority in the offseason appears to be attempting to hold on to first baseman Chris Davis. The star is due for a massive contract, whether that be with the Orioles or someone else, and his status will most certainly dictate what other moves the team will make. If they can’t retain Davis, they will look to improve other spots including corner outfield spots with the Korean star.

2. Washington Nationals

Yes, they do have the possibly, the best player in the world, Bryce Harper in right. What about left field then? Well, Jason Werth is still manning the position while collecting big checks still. Werth has been on a decline and it reached to a point where the Nationals will look to replace him as he only hit .221 and 12 HR last year. Kim Hyun Soo is a possible replacement for Werth in Washington.

3. San Francisco Giants

Both Nori Aoki and Hunter Pence had injury plagued seasons in 2015, while the rest of the Giants outfield struggled to play consistently. Angel Pagan was just horrible last year while midseason acquisition Marlon Byrd failed to pan out. Currently, Hunter Pence is penciled in as the right fielder in 2016 with Gregor Blanco likely playing center. However, with Nori Aoki’s option was declined by the Giants last week and they have a hole to fill in left field, where Kim Hyun Soo plays. 

4. Texas Rangers

Can we imagine an outfield with two Korean players? Yes, we can! Texas had good production from Choo Shin Soo in right and DeShields in center. In left field however, there was the former great, Josh Hamilton. The former super star showed he is not the same player as he was before and the Rangers will look to replace him. Kim Hyun Soo and Choo Shin Soo in the same outfield would be a dream-scenario for Korean fans.

5. New York Mets

The National League Champions will likely lose a big bat in their line-up, Yoenis Cespedes as he will demand too much money in the free agency market. To replace him, the Mets will look into a cheaper option in Kim Hyun Soo.
