[이승원의 ML 돋보기] '첩첩산중', 류현진 없는 다저스의 미래

올해 다저스는 류현진의 공백을 뼈저리게 느끼고 있다. 플레이오프에 갈 경우 그의 빈자리는 더욱 커진다.

LA 다저스의 좌완투수 류현진은 지난 5월 '왼쪽 어깨 관절 와순 마모'로 수술대에 누웠다. 당시 전문가들은 다저스와 단장 앤드류 프리드먼이 클레이튼 커쇼, 잭  그레인키의 뒤를 이을 류현진의 대체자를 물색할 것으로 예상했다.

한때 다저스의 트레이드 쇼핑리스트에 콜 해멀스, 데이빗 프라이스, 스캇 카즈미어 등 굵직한 이름들이 거론되기도 했다. 그러나 다저스는 트레이드 마감 기한을 앞두고 '대어' 대신  알렉스 우드와 맷 라토스로 영입을 마무리했다.

現 다저스 프런트와의 인터뷰를 통해 류현진의 공백이 올해 팀에 끼친 영향력과 남은 시즌을 예측해 보기로 했다.

카를로스 프라이아스와 마이크 볼싱어는 시즌 초 기대 이상의 성적을 내며 류현진의 빈자리를 메워줬다. 그러나 체력이 고갈되자 제자리로 돌아왔다. 브렛 앤더슨도 준수했지만, 그는 3선발보단 4선발이 더 어울리는 듯했다. 

따라서 다저스는 트레이드 마감기한이 끝나기 직전 선발진을 강화하기 위해 맷 라토스와 알렉스 우드를 영입했다. 하지만 이 둘 역시 영입전부터 기복과 임팩트가 없는 눈에 띄는 약점을 가지고 있었다.

그렇다면 다저스는 왜 프라이스, 해멀스, 하물며 카즈미어마저도 노리지 않았을까? 이미 메이저리그 정상급 육성 시스템을 가지고 있고 주머니도 두둑한 다저스가 우드와 라토스를 고수한 것 역시 이해가 가지 않는 부분이었다.

다저스 프런트 관계자는 "다저스는 현재 눈앞의 승리를 보고 달리고 있다. 하지만 구단의 전체적인 성향은 상황에 따라서 유망주를 지키려 한다"며 "대신 류현진이 없는 상황에서 돈 매팅리 감독은 향후 몇 주간 4인 로테이션을 유지하며 커쇼와 그레인키를 더 자주 마운드에 올리려 했다"고 분석했다. 다시 말해 매팅리 감독은 트레이드 출혈을 최소화 하고 커쇼-그레인키 '원투펀치'의 등판 횟수를 극대화해 승리를 추가한다는 계획이다.

시즌 내내 샌프란시스코가 다저스의 꼬리를 밟으며 추격하는 상황에서 이제 다저스에겐 1경기 1경기가 중요하기 때문. 시카고 컵스가 8월에만 19승 9패를 거두며 일찌감치 와일드카드 결정전 참가 의사를 밝혔고 만에 하나 샌프란시스코에게 역전당하면 그대로 플레이오프도 물 건너간다.

현재 까다로운 샌프란시스코의 추격을 떨쳐내기 위해 애쓰고 있는 다저스에게 류현진의 빈자리는 다시 한번 커 보인다. 그러나 앞으로가 더 문제다. 커쇼와 그레인키의 뒤를 이을 3선발과 4선발 후보에 대해 "전혀 모르겠다"고 답한 관계자는 "매팅리 감독 역시 지금은 다가올 악몽에 대해 생각하고 싶지 않을 것"이라고 한숨 쉬었다.

만약 이대로 시즌이 끝난다면, 현재로썬 브렛 앤더슨과 알렉스 우드가 커쇼-그레인키 '원투펀치'를 이을 가능성이 높아 보인다. 지난 2시즌 동안 월드시리즈에 실패한 매팅리 감독에겐 선발 선택이 큰 부담으로 작용하고 있다. 그러나 이번 해 역시 류현진의 공백으로 구멍난 선발진과 함께 챔피언십 진출이 '시도'에서 끝날 것이 유력하다.

Ryu Hyun Jin’s absent this year has been devastating but will become greater from now on
Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Ryu Hyun-Jin underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder back in May. At the time, everyone in the baseball industry believed the Andrew Friedman and the Dodgers would trade for a legitimate No. 3 starter behind Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke to replace Ryu. 

The list included big name pitchers such as Cole Hamels, David Price and Scott Kazmir. However, the team settled with Alex Wood and Mat Latos as replacements for Ryu Hyun Jin at the trade deadline about a month ago. To analyze the impact of Ryu’s injury on the Dodgers this season so far and the rest of the season, I’ve interviewed a current Los Angeles Dodgers front office staff on August 29, 2015.

Carlos Frias and Mike Bolsinger tried to fill the void of Ryu earlier and both held up pretty well until they fell out of gas. Brett Anderson has pitched well, but his numbers would’ve looked a lot better as a fourth starter. “Mat Latos and Alex Wood were acquired at the deadline to try and solidify the stating staff: Wood has been inconsistent, while an ineffective Latos has been sent to the bullpen.
So, why didn’t the Dodgers go out and trade for David Price, Cole Hamels or even Scott Kazmir at the trade deadline? The Dodgers have the most stacked farm systems in baseball and also all the money they want to spend and it just didn’t make sense when the team just stood pat with Alex Wood and Mat Latos.

“The team is in a ‘win-now’ mode but also there is a ‘hold on to prospects’ situation within the organization,” the Dodgers staff said. “Ryu Hyun Jin is being missed greatly this year as Mattingly is deciding to go with a four-man rotation for the next few weeks to try and maximize the starts of Kershaw and Greinke.”

The San Francisco Giants have been right behind the Dodgers in the NL West standings all season and the Chicago Cubs have raced away with the final wild-card spot with a 18-6 record in August, in case of an emergency playoff spot for Los Angeles. 

The Dodgers are clearing missing Ryu this season as the team is trying to hold off the pesky Giants. However, the impact of Ryu’s missed season is about to be much greater once the team is in the playoffs. After Kershaw and Greinke, who Mattingly will turn to for games 3 and possibly 4? “I honestly have no idea,” the Dodgers staff answered regarding the question. “I’m sure Mattingly do not want to think about it right now as it would be a nightmare.” 

If the season ended today, it seems to be Brett Anderson and Alex Wood pitching those crucial games or Kershaw starting on a short 3-day rest for a game 4. For now there is considerable pressure on Don Mattingly to get this mix to the World Series, something he’s failed to do the previous two seasons. The injury of Ryu will likely result in another Dodgers failed attempt for a Championship season however.
