내셔널리그 애리조나를 주목하라

현재 류현진이 빠져있는 LA 다저스지만, 아직도 많은 한국팬은 다저스의 행보에 눈을 떼지 않고 있다. 만약 다저스의 팬이라면 애리조나 다이아몬드백스(이하 디백스)를 눈여겨봐야 한다. 지난 3일(이하 한국시각) 메이저리그 스카우트를 통해 메이저리그(MLB) 내셔널리그 서부지구의 미래를 예측해봤다.

만약 다저스의 승리를 기도하는 팬이라면 2위 샌프란시스코 자이언츠의 경기 결과를 눈여겨 볼 수밖에 없다. 자이언츠는 다저스의 강력한 라이벌이자 월드시리즈 디펜딩 챔피언이다. 또한 모든 이들이 알고 있듯 지난 2010시즌 후로 월드 시리즈를 3번이나 제패한 명실상부 다저스의 최고 라이벌 팀.

하지만 이런 자이언츠와 다저스 뒤에서 올시즌 전혀 관심을 받지 못했던 디백스가 서서히 올라오고 있다. 디백스는 빠르면 올해, 또는 가까운 미래에 내셔널리그 서부지구를 지배할 모습을 갖춰가고 있다.

현재 디백스의 순위는 다저스와 자이언츠의 뒤를 이어 내셔널리그 서부지구 3위다. 따라서 왜 6.5경기(3일 기준)나 뒤져있는 디백스를 다저스가 걱정해야 할까?

그 이유는 잠재력을 보여주고 있는 어린 핵심 선수들에게 있다. 평소 디백스를 관심 있게 지켜보고 있는 스카우트는 "지난 4월만해도 디백스가 플레이오프행 티켓을 놓고 다툴 줄은 몰랐다"며 "그들은 (상대팀에게) 성가신 존재며 절대 포기하지 않는다. 항상 매 경기 열정을 가지고 경기에 나선다. 또한 현재 내셔널리그 최고의 타자 폴 골드슈미트를 보유하고 있다"고 설명했다.

현재 리그에서 284번 타석에 들어서 3할5푼4리의 타율과 함께 20홈런 65타점을 골드슈미트는 올 시즌 MVP 뿐만 아니라 타격 3관왕을 노리고 있는 선수다. 지난 2011년 8월 1일 메이저리그에 데뷔한 그는 현재 빅리그에서 뛰는 그 어떤 선수보다 다저스를 상대로 많은 타점과 홈런을 뽑아냈다.

또한 골드슈미트의 가치는 단지 치는 것에서 그치지 않는다. 지난 2013시즌에 15개의 도루와 함께 뛰어난 수비로 골든글러브 트로피를 손에 넣었다. 이 뛰어난 선수의 활약으로 디백스는 현재 344득점으로 내셔널리그 2위를 달리고 있다.

골드슈미트와 함께 주변 동료들의 활약도 눈에 띈다. 팀과 6년 6850만달러에 계약한 쿠바 출신의 야스마니 토마스와 함께 A.J 폴락, 데이빗 페랄타, 최근 영입에 성공하며 62타석만에 2할5푼8리 4홈런 5개의 2루타 12타점을 기록 중인 웰링턴 카스티오까지. 수비에서도 어린 나이에 최근 슬로우스타트를 이겨내고 활약 중인 유격수 닉 아메드가 있다.

하지만 내셔널리그를 수놓는 화려한 타선과 달리 투수 쪽은 암울하다. 현재 디백스의 마운드는 4.30의 평균자책점으로 내셔널리그 12위에 머물러 있다. 트레이너도 "솔직히 말하자면 디백스가 올해 위협적인 도전자가 될 것이라고는 생각하지 않는다. 마운드의 도움이 없기 때문이다. 하지만 조만간 돌아오는 패트릭 코빈을 고려하면 투수진에 큰 힘이 될 것이다"고 말했다.

2013시즌 디백스의 에이스 역할을 했던 코빈은 토미존 서저리(팔꿈치 인대 접합 수술)로 현재 재활 중이다. 코빈은 최근 콜로라도 로키스전에 나서 5이닝을 2실점으로 소화하며 화려한 부활을 알렸다.

따라서 희망이 보인다. 복귀한 코빈은 곧 디백스의 정규적인 선발로테이션에 합류할 것으로 보인다. 현재 우완 파이어볼러 루비 데 라 로사와 함께 2년차 체이스 앤더슨, 아메리칸리그 신인왕 출신 제레미 헬릭슨, 좌완 강속구 투수 로비 레이가 마운드를 지키고 있다. 여기에 현재 어깨 수술로 DL(부상자명단)에 올라있는 아치 브레들리까지 시즌 막판 복귀 예정이다.

현재 15블론 세이브를 기록 중인 불펜도 불안한 감이 있지만, 디백스가 스토브리그에서 쓸만한 불펜진을 영입한다면 가까운 시일 내에 팀을 지탱하고 있는 유망주들과 함께 서부지구의 가장 까다로운 팀으로 거듭날 수 있다.

Fear the Arizona Diamondbacks

Although Ryu Hyun Jin is out for the season with a shoulder surgery, many MLB fans in Korea still follow the Los Angeles Dodgers and there is a team the fans should take a notice at, The Arizona Diamondbacks. I’ve interviewed a current MLB scout with the insights and knowledge of the National League West on July 2, 2015.

I am pretty sure the most Los Angeles Dodgers fans are scoreboard watching every single night, keeping your eye on the San Francisco Giants, hoping their beloved Dodgers would gain more grounds on the second-place Giants. If you are, you are perfectly right on with who the biggest rival is for the first-place Dodgers within the NL West. As we all know, the Giants are the defending champions and have won three World Series since 2010. However, there is a team without an expectation coming into this season, not a single Dodgers fan is concerned about, a team with a legitimate chance of taking over the NL West this year and the years beyond.

Arizona Diamondbacks currently sits in third-place in the NL West behind the Dodgers and Giants. So, why would the Dodgers be worried about a team that is 5.5 games behind? Well, because the young core of the Diamondbacks is bound to break out. “I definitely didn’t expect Arizona to keep this up and still be in the hunt for the playoffs back in April,” a scout, who watches the team on regular basis, said about the surprising Diamondbacks. “They are pesky and they don’t give up. They play with energy every single game and obviously, they have arguably, the best hitter in the whole National League in Paul Goldschmidt.”

Paul Goldschmidt, who is batting .349 with 20 HRs and 66 RBIs in 292 ABs coming into July 6th, is a MVP and a Triple Crown candidate this year. Since Goldschmidt made his MLB debut in August 1st of 2011, he has more HRs and RBIs against the Dodgers pitching than anyone else in the big leagues. Not only can Goldschmidt hit, but he also has 15 SBs and is a Gold-Glove winner in 2013. Led by their best player, the Diamondbacks are second in runs scored in NL with 344 runs.

Paul Goldschmidt is supported in the line-up by the likes of, Yasmany Tomas, who was signed out of Cuba for 6 yrs/68.5 Million dollars in the off-season, AJ Pollock, David Peralta, and recently acquired, Welington Castillo, who is batting .258 with 4 HRs, 5 doubles and 12 RBIs in just 62 ABs since coming over to Arizona in a trade with Seattle Mariners, is providing a much needed power from the Catching position. In addition, their defense has been excellent, led by their young Short Stop, Nick Ahmed, who is coming along at the plate as well after a slow start.

However, the pitching side of the story has been the total opposite as the Diamondbacks rank 12th in NL with 4.30 ERA. “To be honest, I don’t believe the Diamondbacks will be a contender in NL West this year due to their lack of pitching but they might get a huge help with Patrick Corbin coming back soon though,” the scout said. Patrick Corbin, the ace of the staff in 2013, is returning from a Tommy John surgery. Corbin pitched five solid innings for his long and hard-worked comeback against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.

With the addition of Corbin, starting rotation will likely be included with Corbin, Rubby De La Rosa, a hard-throwing right-hander with tremendous stuff, Chase Anderson, who is having a fine sophomore year, Jeremy Hellickson, a former AL Rookie of the Year, and Robbie Ray, a left-hander with a blazing fastball. The Diamondbacks also have Archie Bradley, who is currently on DL with a shoulder injury, who could be back later in the season after receiving a confirmation that there is no structural damage in his right shoulder Thursday. The bullpen is still a little shaky with MLB leading, 15 blown saves, but if the Diamondbacks can find a few relievers who can get outs in late innings, the team will be very difficult to contain with not just this year, but years to come with their resilient young core of players.
