[이승원의 ML 돋보기] MLB는 '악동' 손호영 같은 선수가 더 필요하다

지난 5일, 현재 메이저리그 시카고 컵스의 시스템에 따라 성장하고 있는 마이너리거 손호영(21)을 직접 만나봤다. 또한 현 메이저리그 스카우트를 만나 그의 잠재력에 관해 들어봤다.

손호영은 2013시즌 홍익대학교에서 선수생활을 하던 도중 대학교에서 갑작스럽게 자퇴를 선언했다. 당시 그는 15경기에 나서 2할9푼8리(57타수 17안타)의 타율을 남겼고, 리드오프로서 14개의 도루를 기록했다. 준수한 성적이었지만 몇몇 사건에 휘말린 후 팀 컬러에 녹아들지 못했다. 결국 1학년 때 팀에서 나와야 했다.

그리고 몇 달 뒤, 미국 메이저리그 구단 시카고 컵스는 손호영과의 마이너리그 계약을 발표했다. 그가 새로운 환경에서  잠재력을 폭발시킬 것을 기대했기 때문이다.

손호영을 지켜봤던 현 메이저리그 스카우트는 "손호영은 수비가 좋고, 스피드 역시 평균 이상이다"라고 평가했다. 그리고 미국 무대에서의 첫 해, 루키리그에서 활약한 그는 25경기 71타수 2할5푼4리 9타점 12도루의 기록을 컵스에게 안겨줬다. 그가 가진 잠재력을 고려한다면 컵스에겐 '공짜'나 마찬가지였다.

"우리는 한국에서 온 손호영과 같은 선수가 더 필요하다"고 주장한 스카우트는 "현재 한국에는 뛰어난 실력을 갖췄음에도 몇몇 문제 때문에 기회를 얻지 못하고 있는 선수가 많다. 하지만 실력만 가지고 있다면 그들은 미국에 충분히 적응할 수 있다. 한국에 (손호영처럼) 이 정도의 실력을 보여줄 수 있으면서도 몇몇 문제 때문에 뛰지 못하는 선수들이 많다"고 덧붙였다.

지난 5월 끝난 'Extended spring team(스프링캠프 개념의 리그)'에서 3할7푼의 성적을 남긴 손호영은 벌써 뛰어난 활약으로 팀에 보탬이 되고 있다.

손호영은 "현재 미국에서 잘 적응하고 있다. 지난해는 적응의 해였던 것 같다. 그리고 이제는 팀에게 내가 무엇을 할 수 있는지 보여줄 것"이라며 "이제 정신적으로도 한단계 성숙했다. 다시 야구를 할 수 있는 기회를 얻은 걸 감사하게 생각한다"고 미국 생활을 설명했다.

실력을 인정받은 손호영은 지난 1월 열린 '윈터 마이너리그 캠프'에도 초대받았다. 윈터 마이너리그 캠프는 실력과 잠재력을 인정받는 몇몇 유망주들이 초대 받는 곳이다. 그는 "지난 시즌을 마치고 스프링 트레이닝으로 직행할 줄 알았지만, 윈터 캠프에 참가할 수 있어 영광이었다"고 소감을 밝혔다.

계속 성장해 나가는 손호영은 오는 6월부터 'Short single A(루키 리그와 싱글A 사이 레벨의 리그)'에서 활약한다.

MLB needs more players like Son Ho Young

June 5th of 2015, I met up with a Chicago Cubs minor league player, Son Ho-Young who is currently working his ways up in the Cubs system. I also met up with a current MLB scout and the scout talked about Son's potential in the major leagues

Son Ho-Young was a college dropout who played parts of the 2013 season with Hongik University. Son batted .298 (17-for57) in 15 games with 14 steals while batting primarily at the leadoff spot. However, he did not fit in with the team and dropped out as a freshman after a few troubled incidents. 

After a few months however, the Chicago Cubs have signed Son Ho-Young to a minor league deal, hoping Son will reach his potential in a new environment. “Son was regarded as a good defensive player with above average speed,” a current scout in MLB said about Son. In his first year with Cubs last year, he batted .254 with 9 RBI and 12 stolen bases. Given Son’s talent, he was considered a “bargain”, at the time he was signed by the Cubs.

“We need more players like Son from South Korea.” An MLB scout said. “There are plenty of talented players in Korea who do not get chances over there due to their problems but they can definitely fit in here in the U.S. if they have the talent. I know a lot of kids in Korea who can compete at this level but is abandoned from baseball because of their issues.” The scout added.

The Chicago Cubs are already benefitting as Son is currently batting .370 with Chicago Cubs extended spring team this year. “I am adjusting well here in America.” Son said. “I think last year was an adjustment year for me but this year, I am ready to show the team what I can do. I’ve matured and I am just thankful that I was given this opportunity to play baseball again.” Son told me during a brief interview. 

Son was even invited to participate in a winter minor league camp, which only contains prospects with certain amount of potential, last January. “After the season last year, I thought I would come back to the U.S. for the spring training but the organization invited me for a short winter camp which I was very honored about.” Son said.

Son is expected to join a Short single A in June.
