[스포츠뮤직] 노장 투수와 흑인 래퍼의 만남

이강철. 야구팬이라면 누구나 이 잠수함 투수를 알고 있을 것이다. 89년 해태(현 기아)에 입단한지 벌써 15년이라는 세월이 흘렀지만 그는 여전히 투수로 활동하고 있다. 또한 올해 5월에는 개인통산 최다 탈삼진 신기록을 수립하기도 했다. 물론 이후 송진우에게 타이틀을 빼앗기기는 했지만 그는 여전히 건재함을 과시하고 있다. 사실 그의 전성기는 91년부터였다. 당시 36경기에 출전해 193개의 삼진을 잡아내는 괴력을 과시했고 이듬해에는 최다탈삼진 투수로 선정되기도 했다. 또한 데뷔 때부터 꾸준히 두 자리 승수를 챙겼고 급기야 국내 최초로 10년 연속 두 자리 승수를 올린 투수로 기록되기도 했다. 그리고 99년 시즌을 끝으로 FA 자격을 취득한 그의 안정적인 투구는 각 구단이 침을 흘렸다. 

선발에서 마무리로

여기에 3년간 8억원이라는 엄청난 액수를 제시한 삼성 라이온즈에 새 둥지를 틀며 새로운 야구 인생을 시작했다. 하지만 이강철은 오히려 이때부터 내리막길을 걷기 시작한다. 1승4패, 방어율 7.30라는 암담한 성적으로 이적 첫 해를 보낸 그는 이듬해 다시 해태로 내쫓기는 지경에 이르렸다. 이렇게 그해의 대표적인 ‘먹튀’로 평가받던 이강철은 오히려 고향팀에 돌아온 이후에는 선발 대신 중간계투와 마무리로 성공적인 변신을 보이며 제 2의 전성기를 달리기 시작했다. 팀의 최고참 선수로 그리고 여전히 팀에 없어서는 안 될 존재로 맹활약을 하고 있는 것이다. 그렇다면 그의 등장음악은 어떤 것일까? 38세의 나이로 팀 최고령이라는 점을 감안한다면 최호섭의 ‘세월이 가면’ 같은 곡이 아닐까? 하지만 예상을 무참히 깨트린 그의 등장음악은 2PAC의 ‘All Eyez On Me’이다.

노장투수와 흑인래퍼?

2PAC이 누구인가? 90년대 흑인 대중 문화를 대표했던 래퍼 중의 래퍼 아닌가? 물론 고령의 야구 선수가 등장음악으로 흑인 음악을 사용하면 안된다는 법은 없다. 하지만 91년 데뷔해 96년 총기사고로 사망할 때까지 당대 최고의 아티스트로 짦고 굵게 살다간 2PAC과 10년 동안의 성공적인 선발 투수 그리고 현재는 마무리로 변신해 어떻게 보면 길게 살고 있는 이강철은 다르다고 보면 다를 수도 있는 두 사람이다. 하지만 이들의 일대기를 자세히 살펴보면 결정적인 공통점을 찾을 수 있다.

우선 2PAC은 단지 래퍼라고 하기엔 너무 파란 만장한 삶을 살았다. 71년 뉴욕에서 태어나 19살이었던 91년 첫 솔로 앨범을 발표하면서 래퍼의 길을 걷기 시작한다. 당시 앨범의 판매량은 그리 높지는 않았지만 기존의 사회 질서에 반발하며 주목을 받기 시작한다. 이후 발매한 앨범의 성공으로 그는 젊은 나이에 스타덤에 올랐고 92년에는 영화 배우로 데뷔하며 대중적인 인기를 얻는데 성공한다. 그러나 당시 맡았던 갱스터 스타일의 DJ 역할은 그에게 ‘문제아’라는 이미지를 각인시켰고 이 꼬리표는 평생 그를 따라다닌다. 

2PAC에서 마카벨리(Makaveli)로

이 굳어진 이미지는 그가 인기를 얻을수록 더욱 심해졌다. 심지어는 당시 팽배해 있던 갱스터 래퍼들의 전쟁에서 동부 래퍼들이 그를 중심으로 뭉치기까지 했다. 사실 그가 폭력적으로 변한 것도 어떻게 보면 언론과 주위 환경이 그를 그렇게 부추긴 점도 없지 않다. 그리고 그는 결국 이 폭력성 때문에 결국 96년 11월30일 뉴욕의 스튜디오 앞에서 총기 사건에 연류된다. 사건 당시 복부에 세 방, 머리에 두 방의 총알을 맞고 병원으로 실려간 투팍은 수술 후 단 세시간만에 퇴원하며 주위를 놀라게 했다. 하지만 놀라움도 잠시 그는 그로부터 6일 후 25살의 나이로 사망하고 만다. 그의 죽음에 대해서는 아직도 많은 미스테리가 남아 있다. 특히 살아있을 때보다 사후에 더 많은 앨범이 제작되었다는 점과 하나같이 자신이 죽었을 당시의 이야기를 하고 있다는 점. 그리고 정말 같은 사람이 만들었을까 싶을 정도로 확연히 차이가 나는 생전의 앨범과 사후 제작된 앨범의 기량 차이이다. 물론 이런 점 뿐만 아니라 여러 석연찮은 점 때문에 2PAC의 죽음은 조작이고 실제로는 살아있다고 주장하는 이들도 있다. 하지만 이 부분은 그냥 지나치자. 중요한 것은 그가 사망 이후 마카벨리(Makaveli)라는 가명으로 마치 새로운 삶을 살고 있다는 것이다. 바로 이 점이 선수 이강철과 닮은 점이다. 

선발은 잊어라. 마카벨리가 있다.

10년 동안 두 자리 승수를 쌓던 선발 투수 이강철은 삼성에서의 적응 실패로 사라졌다. 하지만 이후 중간 계투와 마무리 투수로 새롭게 부활한 것이다. 마치 마카벨리(Makaveli)의 롱런처럼 말이다. 혹시 이강철이 등장음악으로 2PAC의 생전에 가장 성공한 앨범의 곡인 ‘All Eyez On Me’를 사용한 점도 바로 자신의 선발 투수로의 향수를 뜻하는 것일지도 모른다. 또한 2PAC의 부활을 기다리는 팬들의 마음처럼 이강철의 선발 복귀를 원하는 이들이 있을지도 모른다. 물론 2PAC이 환생할지는 모르는 일이다. 하지만 적어도 이강철은 마무리라는 새로운 삶을 살고 있다. 이미 마카벨리(Makaveli)가 되어버린 그에게 2PAC이라는 과거는 향수 그 이상의 의미는 아닐 것이다. 2PAC이 아닌 마카벨리의 성공. 이것이 현재 이강철에게 가장 중요한 것이 아닐까.
