[이승원의 ML 돋보기] 박병호 계약, 거 참 이해가 안 가네

메이저리그(MLB)에서 '힘'은 중요하다. 수십 년간 그래 왔고 앞으로도 그럴 것이다. 12월 첫날, 한국의 슬러거 박병호가 보장금액 4년 1200만달러 계약서에 사인했다. 좋은 계약처럼 들릴 수도 있으나, '힘'을 보유한 박병호 같은 선수에겐 아니다.

박병호는 지난해 53홈런을 포함 .343/.436/.716(타율/출루율/장타율)이라는 깜짝 놀랄만한 성적을 남긴 선수다. KBO 야수로는 강정호에 이어 2번째로 빅리그에 진출한 선수가 됐다. 강정호는 지난 시즌 불의의 부상 전까지 .287/.355/.461(타율/출루율/장타율)로 KBO 선수도 메이저에서 성공할 수 있다는 것을 증명했다. 강정호의 활약이 박병호의 1285만달러 포스팅 금액을 끌어낸 것도 사실이다. 박병호와 미네소타 사이에는 30일이라는 협상 기간이 존재했다.

"박병호의 계약은 왜 포스팅 시스템이 없어져야 하는지 보여준 사례다. 더 나은 시스템을 만들도록 노력해야 한다"고 말한 메이저리그 A 에이전트는 "빅리그로 진출하는 외국인 선수들에게 사실상 '이 조건에 사인하던가, 돌아가던가' 방식의 조건이다"고 설명했다.

이런 조건에도 불구하고, 개인적으론 박병호에게 적절한 계약을 가져다주지 못한 에이전트의 잘못도 있다고 생각한다. 박병호의 에이전트 앨렌 네로는 풍부한 메이저리그 에이전트 경험과 함께 업계에서도 존경받는 인물이다(그래서 더 이해가지 않는다).

네로가 포스팅 제도로 인해 다른 팀과 '줄다리기' 협상을 할 수 없었던 건 사실이다. 박병호의 실력이 메이저리그에 적용될지도 의문이었다. 그럼에도 과연 한쪽으로 치우친, 팀에 유리한 계약만이 유일한 옵션이었을까?

네로는 이미 강정호를 피츠버그 파이어리츠와 4년 1100만달러에 연결시킨 경험이 있다. KBO에서 처음 진출하는 야수였기 때문에 이해할 수 있는 숫자다. 현재 협상 기한이 남아있는 박병호의 상황은 다르다. 4년간 1200만달러는 이해하기 힘든 숫자다.

메이저리그 A 에이전트는 "내가 만약 박병호의 에이전트였다면 더 좋은 제시 금액이 왔을 때까지 기다렸을 거다. 네로와 구단은 약 1주일의 협상 기한이 남아있었다"고 안타까워했다. 나 역시 네로가 자신의 고객을 위해 열심히 일했는지 궁금하다.

몇 년 전 류현진 계약을 성사시킨 '구단들의 악마' 스캇 보라스를 떠올려보자. 보라스는 업계에서 최고 에이전트로 평가받는다. 로빈슨 카노, 호세 페르난데즈, 맥스 슈어저, 추신수 등 특급 선수들을 파트너로 두고 있다. 당시 류현진의 계약을 맺을 때 마지막 순간까지 구단과 줄다리기하며 6년 3600만달러를 이끌어냈다. 다저스도 류현진이 필요했고, 보라스는 이 점을 이용해 계약금을 극대화했다.

네로는 그렇게 하지 않았다. 미네소타도 '거포' 박병호를 절실히 원했다. 중소구단이 최고응찰액을 제시했고, 유망주 미구엘 사노를 외야로 보내며 미리 박병호의 자리를 마련했다. 박병호가 '절대 을(乙)'은 아니었던 것이다.

그렇다면 네로에게 무슨 일이 일어난 걸까. 왜 마지막 순간까지 공격적인 협상을 진행하지 않았으며, 자신의 고객에게 최고 금액을 안겨주지 못한 걸까. 앨런 네로가 박병호의 계약금에 손 댈 자격은 있는 걸까.

Did Park Byung Ho’s agent do his job?

Power is precious in MLB; it has been for a decade and it will be until professional baseball is played in the United States. On the first day of December, a Korean slugger, Park Byung Ho agreed to a deal worth $12 million over four years with the Minnesota Twins. The money might sound lucrative for some, but it is not to the player caliber of Park. The Korean star hit eye-popping numbers last season as he hit .343/.436/.716 with 53 HR over 622 plate appearances.

Park becomes the second position player to make the transition to MLB after playing in KBO after Kang Jung Ho. The Pittsburg Pirates infielder proved KBO players can hit in MLB recording .287/.355/.461 last season before the gruesome knee injury ended his rookie season. Kang’s performance definitely assisted Park Byung Ho as the Twins placed the highest bid of $12.85 million dollars. Therefore, on November 9th, Minnesota won the right to negotiate with Park for 30 days.

“Park Byung Ho signing the deal today is the reason why the posting system should probably be banished, or at least try to develop the better way of the system,” a current baseball agent said. “Right now, it is not fair for players coming over from overseas as teams are basically saying ‘take this deal or go back’.”

Personally, I see some fault in Park’s agent as he couldn’t find his player a fair deal. Alan Nero, a long-time agent in MLB and widely respected in the baseball industry, is Park’s agent. Yes, there was a posting system that limits agents to play ‘games’ with different teams. Yes, there is an uncertainty how Park’s game will transfer to MLB. However, was this lop-sided, team-friendly deal the only option? He already gifted his other client, Kang Jung Ho, to the Pirates last year with $11 million dollars over 4 years deal but that was understandable due to Kang being the first KBO position player to make the jump. Nevertheless, this time, it is not comprehensible to just settle with $12 million dollars over 4 years for Park Byung Ho.

“If I had the privilege of being Park’s agent, I would have waited until the better deal is offered,” the aforementioned agent said. “Mr. Nero still had over a week to possibly receive a better offer, right?” I am questioning if Alan Nero fully worked his tail off for his client. 

Let’s go back a few years back at Ryu Hyun Jin and his evil-empire agent, Scott Boras. Mr. Boras is considered to be the top agent in the baseball industry and his gaudy clients include, Robinson Cano, Jose Fernandez, Max Scherzer, Choo Shin Soo, etc. Boras took Ryu’s case with the Dodgers in 2013 to the last second and signed the deal that was considered to be fair at the time of $36 million dollars over 6 years. 

The dodgers needed Ryu Hyun Jin and Boras was able to use it in his advantage. However, Nero did not use the same advantage as the Twins desperately needed Park's big bat in their line-up.

A small market team, Minnesota Twins, needed power in their line up and became creative as they decided to bet on an unproven power potential in Park. In order to bring him in, the organization is moving their big time prospect, Miguel Sano to the outfield from the DH spot. Park Byung Ho had his chance.

What happened with Nero then? Why couldn’t he wait until the last minute, at least last week, to try giving his client the best offer possible? I am not so sure if Alan Nero truly deserves part of Park Byung Ho’s salary.
