[이승원의 ML 돋보기] '파격 행보' ARI, 응답하라 2001

모두의 예상을 깨고 잭 그레인키를 가져간 팀은 애리조나 다이아몬드백스(이하 디백스)였다. 디백스는 그레인키에게 6년 2억 650만 달러 계약을 안겨줬다.

내셔널리그 서부지구 경쟁자인 LA 다저스와 샌프란시스코 자이언츠를 제치고 그레인키를 데려간 디백스의 행보는 야구계에 충격을 안겨줬다.

그렇다면 디백스가 다시 한번 내셔널리스 서부지구를 지배한다고 예상해도 될까? 이번 영입이 과연 다저스, 샌프란시스코 2강 구도로 이어지던 내셔널리그 밸런스를 깨뜨릴 수 있을까? 답은 '그렇다'다. 단지 그레인키 영입 때문만은 아니다.

디백스는 이미 1루수 폴 골드슈미트와 중견수 A.J. 폴락이라는 리그 최정상급 방망이를 보유하고 있다. 2015시즌 디백스는 내셔널리그에서 2번째로 많은 득점을 기록했다. 반면 디백스 선발진은 리그에서 2번째로 적은 이닝을 소화하며 상반되는 행보를 걸어왔다. 지난해 성적은 79승 83패. 지구 선두 다저스와는 13경기 차이가 났고 2위는 역시 지난 6년 동안 3번의 월드시리즈 타이틀을 가져간 샌프란시스코 몫이었다.

내셔널리그 구단 고위급 관계자는 "디백스는 그들을 다음 레벨로 끌어올려 줄 강력한 1선발이 필요했다. 디백스는 지난 몇 년간 브렌손 아로요와 같은 비교적 저렴한 선수를 영입했고 자금을 모아왔다"며 "디백스의 올시즌 스토브리그 목표는 2명의 정상급 선발 영입이었다. 따라서 아직 그들의 영입 전쟁은 끝나지 않았다"고 했다.

또 다른 영입은 셸비 밀러로 이어졌다. 애틀란타 브레이브스는 리빌딩에 초점을 맞추고 있었고 디백스는 제이크 램, 브랜든 드루리, 크리스 오윙스처럼 젊은 자원이 넘쳐났다.

결국 디백스는 엔더 인시아테와 애론 블레어, 그리고 2015 드래프트 1라운드 1번 댄스비 스완슨을 내주며 밀러를 데려왔다. 내셔널리그 구단 고위 관계자는 "디백스가 밀러 영입을 위해 큰 출혈을 감수해야 했다. 그러나 팀은 미래가 아닌 '현재'를 보고 있다"고 강조했다. 

지난해 33경기에서 3.02의 평균자책점을 남긴 밀러를 포함해 디백스는 이제 지구에서 가장 강력한 선발 라인업을 구축했다고 봐도 무리는 아니다. 그레인키를 필두로 코빈, 밀러, 레이, 데 라 로사로 이어지는 선발진은 튼튼하다. 이미 막강한 화력을 보유하고 있는 디백스는 보강된 마운드와 함께 내셔널리그 최강팀으로 거듭날 수 있는 조건을 갖췄다.

상대들을 더 두렵게 만드는 사실은 디백스 선수들의 나이다. 지난해 리그에서 가장 어린 팀이었던 디백스였다. 아직도 주력 선수들은 전성기거나 발전 중이다. 그레인키 역시 좋은 제구와 완급조절로 향후 몇년간은 든든하다. 따라서 내년뿐만 아니라 향후 수년간은 디백스의 시대가 열릴 수 있다. 앞서 다저스와 자이언츠라는 공룡 구단은 지갑을 열며 힘자랑을 했지만, 이제는 이 어린 디백스를 두 구단이 감당하지 못할 수도 있다.

황금시대를 맞이한 디백스다. 지난 2000년대 초반 랜디 존슨, 커트 실링, 루이스 곤잘레즈, 제이 벨, 맷 윌리엄스, 김병현을 보유했던 당시 이후 가장 높은 기대감이다. 2001년 디백스는 월드시리즈에서 뉴욕 양키스를 상대로 역대 가장 흥미로운 월드시리즈를 연출하기도 했다. 물론 전성기 끝자락이었던 이 '옛 왕조'는 얼마 못 가 2003시즌 후 무너졌다. 그러나 이번 황금세대는 다르다. 우리는 향후 몇년간 리그를 지배할 새로운 야구 왕조의 탄생을 목격하는 것일 수도 있다.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will win the NL West for Years to come
 
In a astonishing turn of events, the D-backs were the winners of the Zack Greinke sweepstakes last Saturday, agreeing to a six-year, $206.5 million deal with the right-hander. 
 
The Diamondbacks certainly shocked the baseball world by taking Greinke away from both of the NL West's favorites, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. So is it fair to consider if the D-Backs will be shocking the NL West again in October by winning the division, as well? Is this the move that finally tilts the balance of power away from Los Angeles or San Francisco? Yes and I am not just assuming because of the addition of Greinke.

The Arizona Diamondbacks already had one of the best offenses in the league last season led by the best first baseman in baseball in Paul Goldschmidt and all-star CF in AJ Pollock. Arizona scored the second-most runs in the NL last season but was thin in the pitching department as the Diamondbacks starters threw the second-fewest innings in the league. The Diamondbacks finished 79-83 last season, 13 games behind the West champion Dodgers and also trailing the Giants, who have won three of the past six World Series.

“The Diamondbacks needed a No.1 guy who can take their team to the next level and because they have been saving money last few years with the likes of Branson Arroyo trade, Greinke became a reality for them” an NL exec said. “Their goal coming into the offseason was to get two quality starting pitchers so I am sure they are not done yet.”

That another acquisition resulted in Shelby Miller. The Braves are in a rebuilding mode and the Diamondbacks traded for Miller as the Diamondbacks definitely have surplus of young position players, such as Jake Lamb, Brandon Drury, Chris Owings, Ender Inciarte, the organization could have dealt. “The Diamondbacks did give up whole lot but they sure are in a ‘win now’ mode,” the aforementioned NL exec said. The Diamondbacks wind up trading Ender Inciarte and two excellent prospects in Aaron Blair and last season’s No. 1 overall pick, Dansby Swanson, for the 25-year old right hander Wednesday.

Along with a stud like Miller, who had an ERA of 3.02 in 33 starts last season, the Diamondback now possibly have the best starting rotation in the pitching-rich NL West, led by Greinke, Corbin, Miller, Ray and De La Rosa. The Diamondbacks already had the best offense in the league and with this group of outstanding pitching staffs; they might become the best team in the whole National League.

The scariest and the most impressive part of this collection of players might be their age. Last season, the Diamondbacks were the youngest team in the league and outside of Greinke, every key player on the team is still in their prime or still developing into their prime of their careers. Plus, Greinke will likely age well with his outstanding command and off speed pitches. This could mean that the Diamondbacks will not only be in contention for next few years but they will be in contention for many years to come. 

The Dodgers and Giants have money to spend and both organizations are not afraid to show their muscles. Regardless, the young core of Diamondbacks might be too much to handle for these two great franchises however. 

The golden age of the Diamondbacks is here. The last time the organization boasted this kind of expectations were the core of Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Luis Gonzalez, Jay Bell, Matt Williams and Byung Hyun Kim in the early 2000’s. If you remember, the 2001 Diamondbacks won one of the most exciting World Series in history versus the New York Yankees. 

Still, the ‘legends-like’ players were at the end of their careers at the time and the success and dynasty afterwards could not last long as the team lost the most games in ML just two years after, in 2003. Unlike the last great era of the organization however, this new group of Diamondbacks will last for many years and it is very possible we could see a new dynasty coming in baseball.
