[이승원의 ML 돋보기] MLB 스카우트가 예상한 다음 메이저리거는?

피츠버그 파이어리츠와 텍사스 레인저스 두 팀은 현재 플레이오프 진출을 향해 달려가고 있다. 피츠버그는 내셔널리그 와일드카드 1순위이며, 텍사스는 아메리칸리그에서 깜짝 활약을 펼치고 있는 휴스턴 애스트로스에 이어 2위다.

치열한 플레이오프 진출 싸움을 이어가고 있는 두팀에 강정호와 추신수는 팀에 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 두 선수의 활약상과 함께 다음 메이저리거는 누가 될 수 있는지 MLB 스카우트에게 물어봤다. (인터뷰는 한국시간 기준 15일에 진행됐다. 언급되는 모든 기록은 15일 기준)

먼저 강정호는 처음 미국 무대에 발을 들여놓을 때 많은 의문점을 안고 왔다. 이 스카우트는 "강정호가 최악의 스프링캠프를 보낸 후 '과연 메이저리그 피칭에 적응할 수 있을까? 유격수를 소화할 수 있을까?'라는 사람들의 의문점을 떨쳐낼 필요가 있었다"고 전했다. 하지만 우려와는 다르게 강정호는 매일 경기에 나서는 선수가 됐고, 유격수와 3루수로 모두 기용되며 활약을 펼치고 있다.

강정호는 이제 피츠버그에서 눈에 띄는 활약을 펼치고 있으나, 많은 전문가는 아직도 "메이저리그 투수들은 워낙 실력이 출중한 덕분에 강정호에 대한 적응을 금세 마칠 것"이라며 이 활약이 이어질지 확신하지 못하고 있다. 

전문가 예상이 옳을 수도 있다. 강정호는 지난 15경기에서 홈런 1개와 7타점을 포함해 1할7푼1리의 타율과 2할9푼2리의 출루율에 머물러 있다. 하지만 강정호 역시 메이저리그에 적응하며 지난 8경기에서 3할3푼3리 3타점을 기록 중이다.

추신수의 올시즌 초 활약은 '비참하다'라는 표현이 어울렸다. 추신수의 4월 성적은 52타석에 들어서 9푼6리였다. 50타석 이상을 소화한 역대 텍사스 선수 중 가장 안 좋은 성적. 당시 추신수는 "이제 겨우 50타석이다"라고 말하기도 했다. 그리고 그의 말은 맞았다. 긴 시즌 중 겨우 한 달이었고 지난 30경기에서 2할6푼4리의 타율과 3할4푼6리의 출루율을 보여주고 있다. 장타력은 4할5리며 4개의 홈런과 18타점을 기록 중이다. 

스카우트는 "추신수는 베테랑이다. 그는 이미 증명된 선수고 당연히 증명된 선수에게 나올법한 성적"이라며 추신수의 반등을 대수롭지 않게 여겼다. 추신수의 통산 성적은 이날 기준 2할8푼에 125홈런이다.

그렇다면 이 둘의 뒤를 이을 다음 메이저리거는 누가 될까? 스카우트는 "메이저리그 팀들은 무조건 박병호를 눈여겨볼 것이다"라며 "엄청난 힘, 20홈런은 그냥 칠 선수"라고 박병호에 대해 간단히 설명했다. 박병호는 올시즌을 마치면 포스팅을 통해 메이저리그에 진출할 수 있다. 

이 스카우트는 또 현재 템파베이 레이스에서 활약 중인 이학주와 일본에서 뛰고 있는 오승환을 언급했다. 템바베이의 '트리플A' 소속인 이학주는 현재 마이너리그에서 42경기를 뛰며 2할5푼2리 1홈런 9타점을 남기고 있다. 그는 "이학주는 올시즌 막바지에 메이저리그 팀들의 주목을 받을 것으로 보인다"고 밝혔다.

이어 오승환을 언급하며 "오승환 같은 경우는 흥미로운 케이스가 될 것이다. 하지만 내 예상으로는 메이저리그 팀 중에 일본만큼 연봉을 제시하는 팀은 없을 것으로 보인다. 따라서 그의 선택은 일본 잔류가 될 것"이라고 내다봤다.

스카우트는 끝으로 "메이저리그 팀들이 이제 서서히 한국선수들의 활약을 알아채기 시작했다"라며 "한국리그가 메이저리그에 뛰어난 선수를 배출하는 곳으로 자리잡고 있다"고 말했다.

Kang Jung Ho and Choo Shin Soo are both helping their respective teams in the playoff hunts, who will next?

Pittsburgh Pirates and Texas Rangers are both in the playoff hunt as the Pirates lead the Wild Card in National League and the Rangers are second in the American West behind the surprising Houston Astros. Two Korean players, Kang Jung Ho and Choo Shin Soo, are both crucial parts of their respective teams as both teams make a push to the playoffs. To see who can be the next Korean player to help a MLB team, I interviewed a current MLB scout.

Kang Jung Ho came to the United States with all kinds of questions. “Would Kang be able to adjust to Major League pitching? Can Kang stay at Short? Many questions needed to be answered especially, after a poor spring training Kang had,” the scout said. However, Kang has become an everyday player now receiving playing time at both short and 3B. 

Even after becoming a solid contributor for the Pirates however, a lot of baseball experts questioned whether he can keep up the success he was having saying, “Major League pitchers are so good that they will start adjusting to Kang.” They were somewhat correct as Kang has struggled in his last 15 games, hitting only .171, .292 OBP with one home run and seven RBIs. However, Kang is showing he is making adjustments of his own as he is hitting a bit better in last eight games, hitting .333 and 3 RBIs. Overall in the season, Kang is hitting .280 with 3 home runs, 22 RBIs and OPS of .750.

There isn’t any other way to describe Choo Shin Soo’s start to the 2015 season but the word, miserable. Choo hit .096 for 52 at-bats, the lowest batting average at the end of April for a player in Rangers’ history (minimum 50 at-bats). Choo mentioned it’s only 50 at-bats back in April when asked about his struggles. He was right, it was only the first month of the long season and he has turned around his season since then, hitting .264 OBP of .346 and SLG .405 with 4 home runs and 18 RBIs in last 30 games. “He’s veteran, he’s been proved and that is what you expect from a proven guy,” the scout said about the veterans’ turn around. For his career, he is a .280 hitter with 125 home runs. 

So who will be the next Korean player to help a Major League team? “MLB teams definitely will look a close look at Park Byung Ho.” The scout said. “Tremendous power, potential 20 home runs guy,” he described Park briefly. Park can be posted by his current team, Nexen Heroes after this season. The experienced scout also mentioned about Lee Hak Ju and Oh Seung Hwan. “Hak Ju should get a look in the Majors later this season,” he said about the Rays prospect. Lee Hak Ju is currently hitting .252 with one home run and 9 RBIs in 42 games for the Tampa Bay Rays’ AAA team. “Oh Seung Hwan will be an interesting case. I’m predicting that he stays in Japan because MLB teams won’t pay as good as Japanese teams for him,” he predicted about Oh.

“MLB teams are definitely noticing the success of players from Korea,” The scout said about MLB scouts having more interest in Korean players. “I have to admit, Korea is becoming a good source of talent these days for MLB teams.”
